Flyers Lose A Tough One
August 3, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
After scoring runs in each of the first 2 innings, the Flyers were shut out the rest of the way, and went down, 3-2, to the Yuma Scorpions.
Just as they did in the previous night's loss, the Orange County Flyers got up early and then gave up their lead and the game, as they got a 2 runs in the 1st 2 innings and then were shut down for the rest of the game by Yuma Scorpions' starter Steve Soja (6-3) and went down in defeat, 3-2, on Friday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Scorpions' starter Soja got the complete game victory, only giving up a run on 1B Peanut Williams RBI single in the 1st inning, another run from a a broken-bat RBI single by C Jon Marshall in the 2nd inning, and then shutting the Flyers out the rest of the game. Soja only gave up 2 earned runs off 3 hits, while striking out 6 Flyer batters along the way.
Flyers' starting pitcher Mike Natale (3-3) matched Soja pitch-for-pitch most of the game, giving up a SS Jordan Prado opposite-field RBI single in the 3rd inning and a 2-out RBI triple off the right field wall by SS Jordan Prado that tied the game at 2-2 in the 7th inning.
The 8th inning proved to be the pivotal one for Natale and the Flyers. Prado again hurt the Flyers with a lead-off single up the middle and 3B Henry Calderon followed with a high-chopping single over Flyers' 3B Brett Thomas' head. After Natale struck out C Pascual Matos, RF Maikel Jova got an infield hit and then an error from an errant throw to 1st by the Flyers' Thomas allowed Prado to come across the plate and give the Scorpions the lead and eventually the game, 3-2.
Although he got the loss, Natale pitched well for the Flyers, going 7.1 innings while giving up 2 earned runs off 9 hits and 9 strikeouts. P. Williams led the Flyers' attack, going 1-2 with a RBI and a walk.
The loss is the Flyers 2nd in a row and drops them to 8-8 in the 2nd half of the season and 27-27 overall. They continue the series with the Yuma Scorpions tomorrow with a doubleheader that starts at 5:05 pm at Goodwin Field.
