Orange County Flyers News Release
Up by 4 runs after 6 innings, the Flyers blew their lead and the game as they went down in defeat, 7-5, at the hands of the Reno Silver Sox...
Orange County Flyers' pitcher Ben Fox (3-1) and Reno Silver Sox' pitcher Dustin Bergman (4-3), who both double as their respective team's pitching coaches, started the game and dueled against each other with the Flyers getting the edge, 4-0, after 6 innings, but the Silver Sox scored 5 runs in the 7th inning to get a lead they would never relinquish as they wound up defeating the Flyers, 7-5, on Thursday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
As opposed to their victories the previous 2 nights, the Flyers got the lead early, scoring a run in each of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings as they got up 4-0 on the Silver Sox.
Flyers' SS Bret Levier got the them on the board in the 3rd inning with a RBI fielder's choice to score C Buddy Morales, who started off the inning with a double into the right field corner, and get the Flyers the lead, 1-0.
Morales continued to pace the Flyers' attack with a single to left to score DH Mark Okano from 2nd for a Flyers 2-0 after 2 innings and a lead-off single to right in the 6th inning in which he ended up scoring on a wild pitch by Silver Sox starter Bergman for a 4-0 Flyer lead. Morales went 4-5 with a RBI and 2 runs scored to continue his hot-hitting in a game that featured 10 wild pitches.
Things went downhill in the 7th inning for the Flyers as they gave up 5 runs and lost their lead they would never regain. The first 3 Silver Sox batters reached base against Flyers' starter Fox, who was relieved by Ezequiel Ruvalcaba (0-1) with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the inning and the Flyer lead at 4-1. The Silver Sox went on to use 3 Ruvalcaba walks, a wild pitch, and 1B Jose Rodriguez's RBI off a Levier error to get the lead 5-4.
The Silver Sox used two more wild pitches from Flyers' reliever Andrew Soto (1-1), who came in relief of Ruvalcaba in the 8th, to make it 7-4 Silver Sox after 8 innings.
The Flyers got a run in the 9th off Silver Sox closer Eric Thomas (0-1, 3 saves) on a 3B Brett Thomas RBI single up the middle, but failed to conjure up any more against the hard-throwing Thomas.
The loss ended the Flyers 4-game winning streak and dropped their record to 8-7 in the second half of the season, but they still took 2 of 3 from the Reno Silver Sox and move on to face the Yuma Scorpions tomorrow night at 7:05 at Goodwin Field.
