Chico Outlaws News Release

LONG BEACH, CA - The Long Beach Armada got another solid pitching performance, this time from rookie right-hander Dustin Gober, and the Chico Outlaws offense was held in check for the third straight night...the Armada downing the Outlaws 5-2 before 1,389 fans at Blair Field in Long Beach. The win was Long Beach's ninth straight, while Chico suffered its sixth loss in the last seven games.

The Outlaws struck quickly, scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning...Steve Boggs led off the game with a walk, went to third on a Jesse Kovacs double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Nava. But from that point, the Chico offense was non-existent, as Gober proceeded to set down 17 hitters in succession. Outlaws starter Tyler Pearson made the 1-0 lead stand up until the 5th...and at first it seemed like Chico would take their slim lead into the 6th. The Armada's Cole Cicatelli hit into a force play that appeared to end the inning...but home plate umpire Javier Navarro called Pearson for a balk. With Gabriel Mayorga awarded second base, Cicatelli went back to the plate and looped a broken-bat single to center...Mayorga scoring to tie the game. Jorge Araiza reached on a bunt single...then Johnny Kaplan tripled down the right field line to plate both Cicatelli and Araiza to put Long Beach in front 3-1.

The Armada made it 5-1 with two runs in the 7th - Kaplan driving in Kirk Gross with a single and Cicatelli scoring from third on a Chris Klemm sacrifice fly. Chico picked up a run in the 8th when Jason Matteucci tripled and scored on an Eric Pringle groundout, but that was as close as the Outlaws would come...Gober came out in the 9th but fell short in his bid for a complete game; Long Beach closer Dane de la Rosa got the final two outs to lock down the Amada's fifth victory over Chico in seven tries this season.

Gober (3-0) struck out four en route to the victory, with de la Rosa picking up his 11th save of the year...Pearson (4-5) went seven innings but suffered the loss. The Outlaws collected just three hits on the night, with Kovacs going 2-for-4; the Armada had 11 hits, with five players - Kaplan, Cicatelli, Araiza, Jamie Martinez and Chris Wakeland - collecting two safeties apiece. Wednesday's loss dropped Chico to 4-10 in the second half and 29-23 overall...Long Beach improved to 12-2 in the second half and 35-17 on the year. The Outlaws try to avoid the series sweep Thursday, with left-hander Derrick Loop (6-3) on the mound for Chico...the Armada will counter with righty Rik Currier (3-1). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
