Erie Otters News Release

The Erie Otters (9-10-2-1) saw their season-long four-game winning streak come to an end after dropping a 5-2 contest to the OHL-best Windsor Spitfires (18-3-0-3) Saturday night in front of 4,560 at Tullio Arena.

In the first period, the Otters weathered an early storm by the Spitfires as captain Zack Torquato slipped a puck past Windsor goalie Troy Passingham off a pass from winger Mike Cazzola at the 5:43 mark of the first period.

The goal marked the sixth consecutive game Torquato has recorded at least one point.

But the lead was short-lived as Windsor's Justin Shugg would beat goalie Jaroslav Janus on a wrist shot less than one minute later to knot the score at one at the 6:32 mark.

The teams would trade key scoring chances for the next couple of minutes before Erie became the beneficiary of a 5-on-3 power-play as Spitfire Adam Henrique received a roughing minor after the whistle and several seconds later, Harry Young got two minutes in the sin bin for hooking.

It took less than a minute into the five-on-three for Greg McKegg to put home a back door one-timer off a cross-crease pass from Torquato to send Erie to a 2-1 first period advantage, extending McKegg's goal streak to four consecutive games.

But in the second, Windsor showed the firepower that has made them the top team in the OHL.

The Spitfires outshot the Otters, 21-1, and scored three goals to have a 4-2 cushion heading into the final period.

The third period was back and forth as both teams generated scoring opportunities, but the only goal in the period belonged to Shugg, who scored an empty net goal to record the hat trick.

Janus was outstanding in the contest, turning away 50-of-54 shots, which was good enough to earn the second star of the game. The Otters were outshot by the Spitfires, 55-22, in the game.

The Otters will take on the London Knights on the road this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to game action on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan and ottershockey.com, starting at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show.
