Erie Otters News Release

Special teams made the difference for the Erie Otters (2-2-0-1) as they handed the Saginaw Spirit their first loss of the season in a 6-4 triumph at the Dow Event Center Saturday night.

The Otters went 2-for-5 on the power play, and killed all seven of the Spirit's power plays, including two double-minors and a two-minute 5-on-3.

The Otters went on the scoresheet 5:29 into the contest with a power play goal in their fifth straight game. Anthony Luciani deflected a Brett Cook shot past Saginaw goaltender Anthony Peters for his fifth goal of the season.

David Broll picked up his first OHL goal at 8:13 on a 2-on-1 with Mike Cazzola. Broll picked up a long pass from Zach Torquato and fired a shot from the right circle for the landmark goal. Saginaw picked up a goal of their own a minute later to cut the deficit to one going into the second period.

Luciani scored his second goal of the game on a highlight reel play 3:06 into the second period. The forward undressed Spirit defenseman Nick Crawford at the left circle and flicked a shot past Peters to make it a 3-1 lead for Erie. Ivan Telegin pulled the Spirit to within one with his third of the season at 9:39.

In the third period, Matthew Paton scored his first career OHL goal with a tremendous effort. Paton was on his back and slid the puck past Peters from in front of the crease at 6:18.

Greg McKegg scored his second goal of the season on the power play to make it a three-goal game. After Andrew Yogan was denied on the first chance, McKegg roofed in the rebound at 9:36. Afterwards, Anthony Camara collected a pair of goals 1:17 apart to pull the Spirit within one.

The Otters held off the Spirit on the penalty kill towards the end of the game, frustrating the Spirit power play for four minutes and earning an empty netter from Yogan with 28.9 seconds left to seal the deal.

Shane Owen made 37 saves to earn his second win of the season, while Hostetter (2a) and Luciani (2g) each had two points. Luciani now has three two-goal games for the Otters this season.

The Otters return to Erie for their home opener Saturday, October 3 against the London Knights at 7:00 p.m. Before the game, fans are encouraged to attend the pre-game party featuring the Geek Army and dollar refreshments, starting at 5:00 p.m. at Jerry Uht Park.
