(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters added outfielder John Schultz to their roster on Thursday.

Schultz played each of the last two seasons for the Miami Marlins organization. The Pennsylvania native hit .278 his rookie season with the Gulf Coast Marlins in 2011 and improved on those numbers with a .309 batting average last year for the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Class A).

"I am very excited for the opportunity to join the Otters," said Schultz. "After speaking with manager Andy McCauley, I feel like Evansville is a baseball community that has a lot of support for the program, and I look forward to learning more about the area and interacting with fans.

"One thing I'd love to be a part of is a winning team with championship aspirations," added Schultz. "In my two years of affiliated ball, I've lost in the championship round of my respective leagues twice. Winning a championship with Evansville would be a huge breakthrough for my professional career.

Manager Andy McCauley saw many positive things from the University of Pittsburgh standout.

"John has a great career on base percentage and a very good walk to strike out ratio," said McCauley. "He appears to be a very good top of the lineup hitter for us."

The Otters will be having an exhibition game that benefits Jacob's Village on Friday, May 10against the Southern Illinois Miners . First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. CDT at historic Bosse Field . Tickets are $4 for general admission or $6 for reserve seats. All ticket proceeds will go to local charity Jacob's Village.

The Evansville Otters season starts on Friday, May 17 against the Normal CornBelters . The year will feature 51 home games including seven scheduled doubleheaders at Historic Bosse Field.
