Otters' Offense Sparks 8-5 Win over Washington

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters took game two of Opening Weekend 8-5 against the Washington Wild Things Saturday to even the series in front of a sellout crowd of 6,070 at Bosse Field.

Evansville's offense came alive in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs off four straight RBIs from the three through six spots in the lineup.

Toby Thomas' RBI double started the scoring by driving in Ryan Long. Jeff Gardner followed with a sac fly before Travis Harrison would score Thomas with an RBI double. The fourth run of the inning was scored by Harrison off an RBI single from Brandon Dulin to catapult the Otters ahead 4-0 through three innings.

The Otters' offense did not stop there, hanging another crooked number with three runs in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Zach Welz was hit by a pitch would later score off an RBI single by Gardner. Harrison followed with a two-run home run to left, giving the Otters a 7-0 lead.

The fifth and sixth innings went scoreless for both teams.

Washington's offense broke through in the top of the seventh with three runs, featuring a three-run home run from James Harris, his second of the series.

Harris finished 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs in the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Otters added one more run as Gardner picked up his third RBI of the evening with a single to drive in Welz from third.

The Wild Things picked up two more runs in the top of the ninth before Mitchell Aker closed the game to give the Otters the 8-5 win.

Offensively, Harrison went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs and three RBIs, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Gardner earned three RBIs following a 3 for 4 night at the plate.

Patrick McGuff earned the win on the mound for Evansville with six innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Aker received the save after the Wild Things' surge in the top of the ninth inning.

Washington's Thomas Dorminy took the loss, going only 2 1/3 innings pitched while surrendering four runs-three earned-off eight hits.

The series finale is Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for the rubber match at Bosse Field. Sunday is family fun day at the ballpark as families can take advantage of the family package for $40.
