Otters clinch post-season spot

Ryan O'Reilly and Shawn Szydlowski scored special teams goals in the third period to lift the Erie Otters to a 3-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 2,721 at the Tullio Arena. O'Reilly struck shorthanded seven minutes into the third to tie the game at one followed by a power-play goal from Shawn Szydlowski six minutes later that turned out to be the difference in the game. Brandon Biggers added an empty netter and Sean Jones collected two assists as the Otters secured a post-season position for the first time since 2005. Erie improved to 31-28-3-1 on the season. Marcus Carroll scored shorthanded in the first for the only Owen Sound goal. The Attack saw a four-game winning streak end and are now 25-24-7-7 on the season. The Attack led 1-0 after the first and second periods. The Otters out shot the Attack 35-24 in the game as Jaroslav Janus posted the victory. The three stars of the game were 1. Szydlowski; 2. O'Reilly and 3. Owen Sound goalie Scott Stajcer (32 saves).

The Otters play their next three games on the road beginning Friday night when they travel to Sarnia to meet the Sting. Saturday afternoon the Otters are in Kitchener to take on the Rangers in a 2 p.m. start. Both games can be heard live on FOX Sports Radio AM 1330 The FAN and on-line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company) beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off. The next Otters home games take place Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th. Saturday, March 14th it's the Otters and the Kitchener Rangers in a 7 p.m. start at the Tullio Arena. All fans into the game will receive a free menu item courtesy of Taco Bell. Sunday, March 15th it's the Otters and the Guelph Storm in a special 4:30 p.m. start. It's Fan Appreciation Day presented by Erie Business Center and Green Prosthetics as the Otters celebrate St. Patrick's Day by wearing green jerseys and the two teams will compete on green ice!
