Chris Pillsbury pitched seven innings of one run baseball and Brian McKenna drove in three runs as the Evansville Otters defeated the Ohio Valley Redcoats 5-2.
Pillsbury and Danny Bonilla dueled to a 0-0 tie through four innings. In the fifth, the Redcoats took advantage of a bout of wildness by Pillsbury. The Otters' righthander walked two in the inning and with two outs, David Munoz singled to score Jaziel Mendoza and give the Redcoats a 1-0 lead.
Evansville came right back in the bottom half of the inning. After Josh Stewart and Rickey Clinton led off singles. Brian McKenna came up next and deposited a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield fence for a three run homer and put Evansville up 3-1. The Otters scored two more in the inning to start the sixth with a 5-1 lead.
Pillsbury was able to work out of a jam in the seventh as Ohio Valley loaded the bases with one out. On a 2-0 pitch, Kaliko Oligo grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Friday will mark the second game of the series with Cody Blackard (6-3) going for Evansville against Ryan Childs (4-8) for Ohio Valley. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
