GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. - The Missoula Osprey mounted a late rally in their first game here at Suplizio Field on Thursday, but could not rally all the way back as the Grand Junction Rockies picked up a 3-1 win in front of 2,322 fans.
The Rockies scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead off of Osprey starter Jared Ray (1-3), who pitched seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and a hit batsman while striking out two batters. Chase Stevens added a scoreless eighth, also striking out a pair of batters.
The Osprey would score their lone run in the top of the eighth inning on an odd play. Danny Pulfer and Rudy Flores led off the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. Ty Linton then hit a ground ball to third, but what looked like a potential double-play ball ended up in a play at the plate. The throw to first skipped past first baseman Ben Waldrip, allowing Pulfer a chance to score, which he did when catcher Jose Briceno dropped the ball while attepting to make the tag.
Pulfer and Flores each had two hits for Missoula, while Jake Lamb, Evan Marzilli and Socrates Brito also had base hits for the Osprey, who finished with seven safeties on the night.
The Osprey and Rockies will continue their four-game series on Friday at Suplizio Field. The Rockies will have the services of Todd Helton, who will be in Grand Junction on a rehab assignment from the Colorado Rockies as he looks to return to the lineup in Denver by the end of the month. The Osprey will send Ross Gerdeman to the mound, while the Rockies will counter with right-hander Ryan Warner.
The Osprey will return home on Friday, July 27, to take on the Great Falls Voyagers in the beginning of a five-game homestand. Tickets are available now at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula, online at MissoulaOsprey.com and by phone (406) 543-3300.
