Oseguera Shines In 7-2 Giants Victory Over Quakes

Paul Oseguera limited the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to one hit and one run over eight dominant innings in San Jose's 7-2 victory on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. In the opener of a three-game series, Oseguera retired 24 out of the 26 batters that he faced to match a career-high in innings while also striking out nine. The win was San Jose's 22nd of July (22-8) to tie a team record for most victories in a month.

Darren Ford (3-for-5, 2 SB) and Ryan Lormand (3-for-4, 3B) both produced three-hit games at the plate to lead the Giants offensive attack. San Jose never trailed in the contest to snap their season-high tying losing streak at three games.

Oseguera (3-4) set down the first nine batters of his outing, including five via the strikeout. In the top of the fourth with the Giants ahead by a 2-0 score, Andrew Romine led off by reaching second base on a throwing error committed by Lormand at shortstop. A ground out from Hector Estrella advanced Romine to third and then an Efren Navarro ground out scored the run to cut the San Jose lead in half. Jeremy Moore followed with a bunt single in what turned out to be the only hit allowed by Oseguera on the night.

The Giants starter recovered after the bunt single to induce Jay Brossman to ground out before working four consecutive perfect innings over the fifth through the eighth frames. Oseguera struck out one batter each in the fifth and sixth innings and fanned two in a 1-2-3 top of the seventh. The left-hander then needed just seven pitches to retire the side in the eighth.

San Jose quickly jumped in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Quakes starting pitcher Jayson Miller. Ford led off with a single, stole second and then scored when Nick Noonan lined a triple into the right field corner. Two batters, Roger Kieschnick delivered a sacrifice fly plating Noonan for a 2-0 Giants advantage.

San Jose's biggest inning of the night came in the bottom of the fifth against Miller. Lormand started the frame with a single before advancing to second on Skyler Stromsmoe's sacrifice bunt. Ford then lined a single to left putting runners on the corners while Lormand scored when the next batter, Noonan, lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Neal followed with a line drive single down the right field line with Ford catching the Quakes defense off-guard by using his speed to score all the way from first on the play. Kieschnick then capped the fifth-inning scoring with an RBI double off the fence in deep right center field.

The Giants added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to extend their lead further. In the bottom of the sixth, Lormand tripled with two outs before Stromsmoe's RBI double into the right center gap. Then in the eighth, pinch-hitter Shane Jordan belted a double off the fence in right and scored on Aaron Lowenstein's single into shallow center.

Rancho Cucamonga scored a single run in the top of the ninth inning against San Jose reliever Daniel Turpen as Alberto Rosario led off with a double before Romine reached on an error and Estrella delivered an RBI single. Turpen though prevented further damage as Navarro lined into a double play and Moore grounded out on back-to-back pitches ending the game.

Miller (4-7), who entered the game seventh in the league in ERA, suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. Miller struck out four and walked none.

The run charged to Oseguera was unearned while he walked none and threw just 89 pitches during his outing.

Notes: The Giants and Quakes were meeting for the first time this season ... Rancho Cucamonga had been the only team San Jose had not played ... Oseguera was one strikeout away from tying his career high ... The Giants out-hit the Quakes by a 12-3 margin ... Ford stole two bases giving him 20 for the season ... San Jose committed three errors in the contest and have seven errors in their last two games ... The Giants improved their second half record to 27-9.

On Deck: The Giants and Quakes continue their three-game series on Saturday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 6:00 PM. Craig Clark (12-2, 2.85 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Rancho Cucamonga is expected to counter with Jeremy Thorne (2-5, 4.88 ERA).
