Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(SAN BERNARDINO, CA) - The Lancaster JetHawks have had more success against the Inland Empire 66ers than any other team in the Southern Division this season, but the 66ers got some revenge Friday night. Sixers starter Mario Alvarez became just the third pitcher in the California League to turn in a complete game shut out in 2009 as Inland Empire blast Lancaster 14-0.

The JetHawks had their hottest starter, Leandro Cespedes, on the hill but it wasn't his night. After striking out the first batter in the first inning, the next seven 66ers batters in a row reached base safely. When all was said and done in the inning, Inland Empire had pulled in front 5-0. Cespedes struck out the side in the second inning, but left trailing 8-0 after laboring through the third inning.

Alvarez cruised throughout, rarely getting into trouble. He allowed a pair of hits to Matt Weston and Brandon Barnes in the second inning, then didn't let multiple runners reach again until the ninth. Alvarez struck out 12 batters, the most for any pitcher in a game for or against the JetHawks this season.

Brandon Barnes had two hits to lead Lancaster.

The series continues Saturday night in San Bernardino. Tip Fairchild (0-0) will pitch for the JetHawks against the 66ers Josh Wall (1-5). The game will begin at 7:05 and will be broadcast live on radio at Magic 1340 AM and online at JetHawks.com.
