Osabuohien Earns Sportsmanship Award
April 4, 2024 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland Charge F/C Gabe Osabuohien is the recipient of the 2023-24 Kia NBA G League Sportsmanship Award, the NBA G League announced today. The honor was earned by Gabe for his exemplary character both on the court and in the community.
The award itself is named after the late Jason Collier, a former player who displayed the qualities of a great teammate during his career in the NBA G League and in the NBA. Gabe received the honor after a vote of his peers determined he was most deserving based off his demeanor on the court and the extensive list of those he's affected off the court.
"Gabe is the ideal type of player and person we look for in a teammate: hard-working, positive, enthusiastic and selfless," said Charge General Manager Liron Fanan. "He is an amazing person with how he treats people and who he represents. We are very proud of him for earning this award."
In Northeast Ohio this past season, Osabuohien painted rooms at Crossroads Men's Shelter, helped launch the Charge Homeroom Hoopers attendance program at Stepstone Academy, coached the star athletes at Empower Sports and led a holiday shoe giveaway to area kids with Elite Cleveland.
Gabe's generosity was also felt in his adopted home of Morgantown where he attended West Virginia, where he sponsored a back-to-school giveaway that helped over 500 kids across the six surrounding counties. He also sponsored ticket programs for AAU teams across the country and founded his own non-profit organization, Osabuohien's Little Stars.
"Gabe was no doubt the heart and soul of our team this season who always pushed the guys to be at their best," said Charge Head Coach Mike Gerrity. "He has such an infectious, positive personality and connects with everyone he meets. He makes everything and everyone better and there's nobody more deserving of this award."
