Ornelas Highlights Sunday Loss with Homer

FRISCO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders came up short in the series finale at Riders Field with a 7-5 loss Sunday night to the San Antonio Missions. Shortstop Jonathan Ornelas slugged his 13th home run in the bottom of the 4th inning, while first baseman Blaine Crim finished 2-for-5 with two runs driven in.

Frisco (22-17, 58-50) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th but were denied before scoring. All four losses of the week for Frisco were by two runs or less as the Riders had the tying run in the equation in the 9th in every game.

Frisco starter Antoine Kelly struck out three batters in his two innings Sunday night while responsible for four runs on two hits before exiting. After a scoreless inning from right-hander Tai Tiedemann, Kevin Gowdy (0-3) surrendered three runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the 4th inning.

Missions reliever Felix Minjarez (2-1) earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, as he finished with a pair of strikeouts and walks for San Antonio (18-21, 56-50).

The Missions produced four runs on just two hits in the top of the 2nd inning. With runners at second and third, Missions shortstop Connor Kaiser singled both runs. Second baseman Domingo Leyba knocked an ensuing RBI triple, then scored on a wild pitch to take an early 4-0 lead.

The RoughRiders bounced back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the 3rd to even Sunday's score. Catcher Scott Kapers walked before the top four hitters in Frisco's lineup singled, highlighted by a Crim two-run single. With the bases loaded, Josh Stowers and Miguel Aparicio both walked to tie Sunday's score at 4-4.

San Antonio scored three runs in the top of the 4th inning on a pair of home runs off Gowdy to break a 4-4 tie for the final runs scored of the game. Behind scoreless baseball from the 5th through the 9th innings, Frisco and San Antonio used a combined nine bullpen arms in Sunday's game. Rangers rehabber Joe Barlow threw two scoreless innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts, while left-hander Grant Wolfram struck out two batters in one scoreless innings.

The RoughRiders hit the road to and begin a six-game series against the Corpus Christi Hooks on Tuesday, August 16th at 6:35 p.m. in Frisco's first trip to Whataburger Field this season.
