Series Record: Georgia Leads 4-1

THE STAKES: A chance to get back into the playoff race and an opportunity for payback awaits the Orlando Predators (4-5) when they travel to the Atlanta area for a return match-up with Southern Division foe Georgia Force (4-6) on Sunday. Kickoff is 3 p.m.

Fresh off a 33-point pounding over then 7-1 New Orleans, the Predators can get right back in the playoff race with a win over the Force, which has dropped four straight games since beating the Predators 52-44 on March 12. Although Georgia is slumping, Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden says it will not be an easy game. "We haven't won a road game in two months," Gruden said. "In addition, it just seems like we have a difficult time with Georgia. We need to get the same type of effort on both sides of the ball that we received last week against New Orleans."

The Predators have struggled against Georgia, losing four of the five games in the series, including the game earlier this season when the Predators made two key mistakes in the kicking game that cost them a shot at a victory. Jay Taylor missed an extra point that would have tied the game late in the 4th quarter and then missed a field goal with 33 seconds to go after a Kenny McEntyre interception put them in position to win the game. Georgia tacked on a late touchdown for the eight-point victory.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"Sometimes I think we're the Bad News Bears and I am the worst coach in the world and sometimes I think this team could contend for a championship. When the effort is there, we're a pretty good football team. Hopefully, we'll be able to put great effort into this week's game and get on a roll."

--Preds Head Coach Jay Gruden

THE COACHES

PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
After spending the last two seasons as the team's quarterback, JAY GRUDEN returned to the bench as the team's head coach in 2004. Gruden began his coaching career in 1997, serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs, Gruden shocked the AFL world by announcing his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field. In two seasons, Gruden directed the Predators to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal each season. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 record with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback during the regular season. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 47-28 (.627) all-time coaching record into the Georgia game. He is 39-26 in regular season games (.600) and 8-2 as a head coach in playoff games (.800).

Perry Moss, 1991-97 67-31 .684

GEORGIA HEAD COACH MARTY LOWE
Marty Lowe concluded his second season and first full year as Head Coach of the Georgia Force in 2003, guiding the team to a club record eight wins and leading the team to its first AFL playoff appearance. At 32-years-old, he remains the youngest head coach in the league. Counting a 4-6 start to the 2004 season, Lowe has compiled an all-time AFL coaching record of 18-19 (.486 winning percentage). Against the Predators, he is 3-1, having defeated Orlando once in 2002, splitting a pair of games last season, and getting a 52-44 win earlier this season in Orlando.

Lowe began his AFL career as offensive assistant for Nashville in 2000, helping guide that team to a berth in ArenaBowl XIV against Orlando. He played quarterback at the University of Louisville from 1991-95, and played in the AFL for both St. Louis and Texas. Previous coaching experience includes stops at the University of Texas-El Paso (running backs coach) and the University of Louisville (quarterbacks coach).

Quick Fact: The Georgia Force formed an Advisory Board this year, naming former University of Georgia Head Coach and Athletic Director Vince Dooley as Chairman. The Board includes former Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker.

SERIES NOTES:
The first game in 2004 was a back-and-forth affair, where the Predators blew several opportunities to win the game...trailing by seven points in the 4th quarter, James Bowden returned a kickoff 54 yards for a touchdown, only to see Jay Taylor miss the extra point that left Orlando trailing 45-44...Kenny McEntyre then put Orlando into position to win the game with an interception, but the Predators offense stalled and Taylor missed a field goal with 33 seconds to go...As quarterback of the Orlando Predators (2002-2003), Jay Gruden had three of his best passing days ever, throwing for 331, 364, and 300 yards against the Force...he missed the first game of the 2003 season with an injury...Orlando split with Georgia last season, losing 38-36 at home and winning 38-27 on the road...in the home loss last season, Orlando had the ball and a lead with less than 20 seconds remaining, but Georgia's Darryl Hammond stripped Orlando quarterback Connell Maynor of the ball and Steve McLaughlin booted 30-yard field goal on the final play of the game as Georgia walked away with the win...Orlando rallied from a 14-13 halftime deficit to earn a split of the season series with a 38-27 win in Week 13...Cory Fleming (11-102) and Travis McGriff (8-98) played key roles in the win...Predators OL/DL Jermaine Smith played two seasons with the Force and earned All-Arena last year; while Force OL/DL William Carr and DS Kevin Gaines are former Predators players...in addition, Force Asst. Coach Rob Davis played for the Predators last season; while WR/LB Dialleo Burks was a member of the 2001 Orlando Rage (XFL) football team...this is one of those odd series that has a lot more history to it then the 4-1 series record indicates...The Georgia Force came into the league in 2002, as the Nashville Kats relocated to Atlanta...although the Force retained the Kats roster, they elected to call themselves an expansion team despite Nashville's rich history of success in the Arena Football League...Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden actually began his AFL coaching career with the Nashville franchise, serving as offensive coordinator in 1997...as offensive coordinator, Gruden helped Nashville become the first expansion team to beat the Predators twice in the same season...former Predators Head Coach Fran Papasedero played for Nashville that season, as did current New Orleans VooDoo Head Coach Mike Neu...Orlando and Nashville played 12 times from 1997-2001...when those games are included in the series, Georgia leads 10-7...Counting the 12 games with Nashville, six of the games have been decided by eight points or less, including three of the last four games in the series...Here are the all-time series scores:

McENTYRE LOOKS TO TIE/BREAK ALL-TIME
INTERCEPTION RECORD
Kenny McEntyre's quest to become the Arena Football League's all-time interception leader remained on hold again last week, as he remains one behind Durwood Roquemore on the all-time list. McEntyre's last interception came against Georgia and he has not had a pick in the last four games. That is the third longest time McEntyre has gone between interceptions for the Predators in his five-plus seasons with the franchise.

Justin Cleveland OL/DL Thumb Doubtful

McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Counting the game against New Orleans last week, McEntyre has now answered the bell for 97 consecutive games -- a team record.

FLEMING KEEPS STING ALIVE
With five catches for 80 yards and one score last week against New Orleans, WR/LB Cory Fleming has now caught at least one touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games with the Predators. Fleming has also scored at least one touchdown in 24 of 26 career games with Orlando (streaks include playoff games).

WHERE HAS FORCE'S OFFENSE GONE?
Georgia Head Coach Marty Lowe might be asking the same question after his team scored just 26 since last week's loss to Austin. In racing out to a 4-2 start, including an early season win over Orlando, the Force averaged 51.7 points per game. Since beating Orlando on March 12, Georgia has just scored just 126 points, an average of 31.5 per game.

Georgia Force Offense
Games Record Points PPG
1-6 4-2 310 51.7
7-10 0-4 126 31.5

PREDATORS RUNNING BALL IN 2004
Orlando continued to move the ball on the ground last week against New Orleans, out-rushing the VooDoo by a 58-19 margin. After averaging just 7.5 yards per game in their first two contests, the Predators have compiled 360 rushing yards in their last seven games (51.4 average). Rookie Marlon Moye-Moore once again led the way with 36 yards on 10 carries and now leads the Predators with 144 yards rushing yards. With 390 yards rushing through nine games, the Predators are on pace to finish with 691 yards. That total would be the highest in team history.

1,000,000th FAN OF 2004 ATTENDS PREDATORS GAME
With 13,204 fans in the TD Waterhouse Centre on Friday night, the Arena Football League went over the 1,000,000 mark in total attendance for the 2004 season. It was the earliest point of any season in league history for the AFL to hit the 1,000,000 mark.

PREDATORS HOLD NEW ORLEANS TO SEASON LOW
By holding the New Orleans VooDoo to just 24 points, the Predators accomplished several interesting things last Friday. First, the 24 points was the fewest scored by the VooDoo this season. It was also the fewest points the Predators have allowed since holding the Buffalo Destroyers to 23 points back on April 11, 2003. It was also marked the 35th time in franchise history, the Predators have held an opponent to 24 points or less in a single game (35-0). It also marked the 54th time the Predators have held an opponent to 30 points or less in a game. Orlando is 51-3 in those games, with all three of the losses coming in the team's 1991 expansion season.

HOLDING AN OPPONENT TO LESS THAN
Opponent Points # Times Record
10 Points or Less 5 5-0
15 Points or Less 14 14-0
20 Points or Less 18 18-0
24 Points or Less 35 35-0
30 Points or Less 54 51-3

TAYLOR ON RECORD PACE
With a 61.5% success rate on field goal attempts (8 of 13), rookie Jay Taylor is on pace to set a new Predators record for accuracy. David Cool holds the season record of 58.3% (14 of 24) set in the 1998 season.
HEADING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS?
Since playing the Indiana Firebirds (A 50-38 win for the Predators) and the Georgia Force (A 52-44 loss for the Predators) on back-to-back weeks, the Predators started both teams on opposite streaks. Since beating the Firebirds and dropping them to 0-5 on the season, Indiana has won five consecutive games and evened their season record at 5-5. Since beating the Predators and moving to 4-2 on the season the following week, the Force has dropped four straight games and has fallen to 4-6 on the season.

WIN JUST SECOND OVER TEAM WITH WINNING RECORD
Orlando's win over the then 7-1 New Orleans VooDoo was just the Predators second of the season against a team with a winning record (at time game was played).

Opp. Rec. Opponents
Preds Wins at Time Current Record
Carolina 2-1 3-7
Indiana 0-5 5-5
Las Vegas 3-5 3-7
New Orleans 7-1 7-2

PREDATORS CONTROL OWN DESTINY
Orlando's goal of earning a spot in the playoffs for a 13th consecutive season remains in their own hands, despite the team's slow 4-5 start. With the possible exception of a May 2 game with arch-rival Tampa Bay (3-7), every remaining opponent remains in the playoff hunt and five of those opponents are currently in front of the Predators in the race for the playoffs. "There are a lot of games remaining where teams in front of us have to play each other," Head Coach Jay Gruden says. "It goes to reason if we can run the table or go 6-1, we would probably make the playoffs. It's a big if, but there is nobody left on our schedule that we can't compete with."

PREDATORS MOVE TO WITH ONE GAME OF EIGHTH SPOT
Along the same lines as the above note, the Predators are just one game out of the eighth and final playoff spot. If the playoffs were to start today, New York and Los Angeles (both 5-4) would occupy the 7th and 8th positions for the playoffs ... just one-half game ahead of Arizona and Indiana (5-5 each) and one game ahead of Orlando and Detroit (both 4-5).

INAUGURAL ORLANDO PREDATORS BLACK AND RED BALL SLATED FOR MAY 1
The Orlando Predators will host their inaugural Black and Red Ball on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the TD Waterhouse Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Black Tie Optional event will take place on the Predators playing field and all of the proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House and other select Orlando charities. The event will honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the Predators organization, with Head Coach Jay Gruden being the first honoree.

Arena Football League Commissioner David C. Baker will deliver the keynote address. Pat Clarke, sports director of WESH-TV in Orlando, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. A number of other special guests from the sports and entertainment fields have been invited.

The event will include a cocktail hour, silent and live auction, dinner, presentations, live music and dancing. Single seats to the event are $125 each, with tables of 10 (eight seats plus a Predators player, guest or coach) available for $1,200. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

"Over the years, the Predators have always had a good track record of involvement in the Central Florida community through its community relations programs. We have used our resources to help hundreds or organizations with their individual fund raisers," Predators President Brett Bouchy said. "But we also made a conscious decision to become more involved in our community. It started last year when we began securing local ownership of the team and now we are ready to take it to the next level with the creation of the Black and Red Ball. We envision this annual affair becoming a significant event on the Orlando social calendar."

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Orlando at Georgia

Predators WR/LB Cory Fleming:
Cory Fleming continues to pave the way for the Orlando offense, leading the team in receiving for the fifth consecutive game and the eighth time in nine games this season. Fleming's five catches for 80 yards and one score led the Predators to a relatively easy 57-24 upset win over New Orleans, a team that came into the contest with a 7-1 record.

Force Quarterback Leon Murray
After throwing for five or more touchdowns in five of his first six games, Murray has thrown for just 11 touchdowns in his last four games. Gruden believes the secret to beating Georgia is to keep Murray from getting into any type of rhythm, something the Predators failed to do in the first game as Murray completed 23 of 35 (66%) of his passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns. "He's struggled a little bit in his couple of games, but he's the type of player that can turn it around in a hurry," Gruden said.

Predators QB Joe Hamilton
Hamilton looked outstanding in his first game back since sustaining a knee injury in Week 7 against Chicago. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 171 yards (69.6%) and four touchdowns. More importantly, Hamilton showed no ill-effects of the knee injury – running four times for 19 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Hamilton continues his impressive rookie season, with 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions in seven games.

Force WR/LB Dialleo Burks
This former Orlando Rage (XFL) player had a major role in Georgia's win over the Predators in Week 6, catching four balls for 53 yards and one touchdown and then intercepting Hamilton and returning 38 yards for a touchdown on the other side of the ball. "The interception really hurt us in that first game. It wasn't really a case of Joe not seeing Dialleo standing at the ‘Jack' position. It was an incredibly athletic play on his part to make that interception," Gruden said.
