CHICAGO - Green Bay wide receiver/defensive back RANDALL LANE, Oklahoma City wide receiver/linebacker AL HUNT and Birmingham offensive/defensive lineman JERRY TURNER have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2004 season.
BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lane (6-0, 200, Purdue), who is in his third season, became the first Green Bay Blizzard player to ever earn an af2 weekly award by catching 10 passes for 159 yards and six touchdowns in the Blizzard's 67-49 opening night win against the San Diego Riptide Friday night. The win was the Blizzard's first road victory in team history. With his efforts, Lane set new Blizzard single-game records for scoring, receiving yards, receptions and receiving touchdowns. He is the 10th player in af2 history to catch six touchdowns in one game. Anthony Hines was the last person to do it when caught six scores for Cape Fear on July 19 of last season. This is the first weekly award of Lane's career.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK Hunt (5-11, 205, Northwest Oklahoma State), in his second season, lifted the expansion Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz past the visiting the Rio Grande Valley Dorados 55-17 Saturday night with a solid all-around effort. On offense, Hunt grabbed five receptions for a game high 121 yards and four touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he tallied 3.5 tackles (2UA-3AT) and he picked-off an endzone bound pass in the second quarter to prevent the Dorados from pulling within a score of the Yard Dawgz. Hunt, who caught 16 touchdowns for the Tulsa Talons last season, has never won a weekly award in his af2 career. He is also the first member of the Yard Dawgz to earn a weekly honor.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Turner (6-3, 265, Tennessee Tech), a two-year af2 veteran, provided some timely hits and big plays to help the Birmingham Steeldogs to a 44-27 win over Memphis on Saturday night in the Steeldogs home opener. A force on the line all night for the Steeldogs, Turner registered three solo tackles and he took down Memphis QB Brian Jones twice. Turner also forced a fumble that teammate Bennitte Waddell picked up and ran back 31 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Steeldogs a 21-0 first quarter lead. Turner, who spent last season with the AFL's Las Vegas Gladiators, is second on the Steeldogs all-time sacks list with 15. This is first weekly award of Turner's af2 career, and he is the first Steeldog to win an award this season.
