Orlando City SC and CF Montréal Split the Points in Back-And-Forth Affair

April 20, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Orlando City SC News Release

MONTRÉAL - Orlando City SC (2-3-3, 9 points) extended its unbeaten run to four on Saturday night, earning a 2-2 draw at CF Montréal (3-3-2, 11 points) behind an Ivan Angulo stoppage time equalizer at Stade Saputo. The Lions have now taken points on a run that started just under a month ago, with two wins and two draws over that span.

Facundo Torres accounted for the Lions' other score on the evening, also his first of the season, making no mistake on a first-half penalty kick opportunity. Midfielder Martín Ojeda also picked up his first assist of the season in the match with the helper on Angulo's goal.

The Lions will next head return home to host Canadian side Toronto FC on Saturday, April 27 at INTER&Co Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Scoring Summary:

16' Mason Toye (Samuel Piette) - MTL 1, ORL 0

The hosts opened things up just 16 minutes into the match when Samuel Piette played a through ball to Mason Toye, unleashing him behind the Lions' defensive line. Toye took a dribble past Pedro Gallese and roofed it into the net for the opener.

22' Facundo Torres (Penalty Kick) - ORL 1, MTL 1

The Lions got one back just eight minutes later after forward Luis Muriel was taken down in the box by goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois and awarded a penalty kick. Fellow forward Facundo Torres stepped up to the spot and calmly buried his attempt to the goalkeeper's right for the early equalizer.

88' Ariel Lassiter - MTL 2, ORL 1

The home side added its second through minutes before second-half stoppage time, after a driven shot from outside the box that was parried away by Lions' goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. The save, however, fell directly to the foot of Ariel Lassiter who quickly put the rebound away for the go-ahead goal.

90+2' Ivan Angulo (Martín Ojeda) - ORL 2, MTL 2

It didn't take long for the Lions to respond, however, with Ivan Angulo knocking in his first goal of the season just four minutes later. Angulo was found streaking through the box by second-half substitute Martín Ojeda, who whipped a ball across the face of the goal, finding Angulo to tally his second assist of the season.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja:

"Well, we are happy with the performance and tying the game at the end. Seems like it could be a good result, but we were eager to win it at the end, as well. We could have walked out with three points against a good team but the development of the game itself during the whole part was very competitive. I thought we played an excellent first half, we could maybe be clearer in those last actions there, but we really played well. Second half, they [Montréal] had some momentum, they got the goal, but after that we I think we dominated the game."

Match Notes:

Forward Facundo Torres scored his fourth goal on the year across all competitions and his 31st all-time for the Lions, tying former captain Nani for second all-time in Orlando City history.

With the stoppage-time equalizer, Ivan Angulo tallied his first goal of the season with Martín Ojeda earning his first assist of the year on the score.

With the start on the night, midfielder Dagur Dan Thórhallsson made his 50th appearance for Orlando City across all competitions.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja made one change to his starting lineup from his side's last match against D.C. United, with Nico Lodeiro returning to the Starting XI.

Next Match: The Lions will next return home to INTER&Co Stadium on Saturday, April 27 to host Toronto FC. That match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
