Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - In his first game back since being placed on the Disabled List July 14th with a dislocated left shoulder, Bulls third baseman Luis Ordaz went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and three RBI as the Durham Bulls defeated the Richmond Braves, 5-1 on Sunday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham improves to 60-76 on the season while Richmond falls to 51-85.
Ordaz's first RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring left fielder Paul Hoover. In the seventh inning, Ordaz smashed a two-run double to right field, scoring first baseman Eric Munson and Hoover to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead. The other big story on the night was the Durham pitching staff, as starter Jason Hammel and relievers Joe Beimel and Jason Phillips combined to hold the Braves to one run on seven hits. Hammel (2-2) pitched a gem of a game, holding Richmond to no runs on three hits in 7.0 innings of work. The Bulls pitching staff did not allow a run until the Braves scored on an RBI-single by left fielder Jason Bourgeois with two outs in the ninth.
Right fielder Delmon Young put the Bulls on the scoreboard in the first inning, blasting a two-out solo home run to right field for his fifth homer of the season. Durham went ahead 2-0 on Ordaz's sacrifice fly in the fifth and posted three-runs in the bottom of the seventh. After Ordaz's two-run double, centerfielder Darnell McDonald followed with an RBI-double to right field to cap the scoring.
Hammel's pitching performance was the 38th quality start (6 IP, 3 ER or less) for the Bulls this season and by far his best start for Durham. Braves starter Adam Bernero (4-5) suffered his fifth loss of the year, allowing two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Durham Bulls host the Richmond Braves tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the final home game of the season. Tickets are available at the Durham Bulls Box Office, by phone at (919) 956-BULL or online at www.durhambulls.com.
