Orange County SC Sign Striker Erick "El Cubo" Torres

January 13, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) - Orange County SC News Release

IRVINE, CA - Orange County SC has signed former Mexican International and CD Guadalajara (Chivas), forward Erick 'Cubo' Torres, pending league and federation approval, ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season. Torres, 28, joins OCSC having appeared in 266 matches, scoring 66 goals and 27 assists throughout his club career across the Liga MX and MLS.

"I am very happy to arrive and play with the current USL Champions," Torres said. "The city, the stadium, and the fan base are marvelous. I am excited for the season to start and to defend the Orange County jersey."

Breaking through Chivas's first team at 17-years-old, Torres quickly became a stalwart and an attacking force in the Liga MX, CONCACAF Champions League and Copa Libertadores during his initial three years in Guadalajara. In 2013, Torres was loaned to Chivas's MLS sister club, Los Angeles-based Chivas USA, where he continued to make his name as a prolific goalscorer.

"We are beyond excited to bring Cubo, a first class professional and prolific goal scorer, to Orange County," President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss said. "Cubo is a true winner on and off the field and our entire club and fans will welcome him with open arms as we aim to defend our USL Championship title in 2022."

In his debut MLS season, Torres scored seven goals in just 15 appearances with Chivas USA. He followed that up with a single season career-high 15 goals in his second MLS season, while becoming the league's all-time leading Mexican goalscorer. Torres was also selected to the MLS All-Star team, who defeated the reigning UEFA Champions League title holders Bayern Munich, 2-1, in the 2014 MLS All-Star Game.

"I am excited that Erick will be joining our team," Head Coach Richard Chaplow said. "He brings a wealth of experience from playing at the highest level. His impressive qualities, both personally and as a player, will undoubtedly strengthen us. I look forward to watching Erick score many goals for Orange County."

Following a successful two-year loan spell, Torres returned to Guadalajara for six months before being signed by Houston Dynamo FC as a Designated Player. Torres enjoyed the best of his three seasons in Texas when he found the back of the net 14 times and added four assists during the 2017 MLS campaign.

The forward found his way back to his native country for three Liga MX seasons with UNAM Pumas and Club Tijuana prior to returning to the MLS with Atlanta United FC where he spent the previous two seasons.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Torres has represented the Mexican National Team at the U-20, U-21, U-23/Olympic and Senior levels. He was the youngest player on the Mexican squad for the eventual third place finishers at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Torres won the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championships twice (2012 and 2015) and represented his country during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. His debut with El Tri's senior team came in 2014 under Miguel Herrera and played in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Torres joins Chaplow and the OCSC attacking core made up of 2021 USL Championship Finals MVP Ronaldo Damus and recently re-signed midfielder Brian Iloski in the defending champions preparation for their home opener on March 19 against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.

Per club policy, terms of player contracts with Orange County SC will not be released.
