Ontario Fury News Release
Welcome to CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA for tonight's MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE game between the visiting San Diego Sockers and the ONTARIO FURY. Tonight's Fan Appreciation Night presents a battle between the top two teams in the Pacific Division, as the Fury attempt to chase down the Sockers for the Pacific Division crown.
ABOUT THE FURY
LAST GAME: Beat Sacramento Surge, 26-3, Feb. 7
NEXT GAME: at San Diego Sockers, 7 p.m., Feb. 21 at Valley View Casino Center. It is the Fury's final regular season game in 2014-15.
LAST GAME ROUNDUP: Ontario set several franchise records as the Fury scored the most goals in a game by a team this season as they beat the injury-depleted Surge. Tiguinho scored six goals and four assists, while Warren Ukah had four goals and four assists in the win.
CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Legendary Los Angeles Dodgers' manager Tommy Lasorda will serve as the Fury's honorary captain for tonight's game, and will kick out the first ball at the beginning of the game.
RECORDS FALL: The Fury's 26-goal outburst set several team records, and set some season league marks as well.
Team marks set are:
- Points in a game: 10, Tiguinho (previous record, 6)
- Goals in a game: 6, Tiguinho (previous record, 5)
- Most goals (team): 26 (previous record, 13)
League marks:
- Goals in a quarter (all-time): 12
- Most goals in a game (season): 26 (third highest all-time)
- Most goals in a half (season): 15 (second highest all-time)
- Most points in a game (season): 10, Tiguinho (second highest all-time)
LEAGUE HONORS: The Fury's captain, Tiguinho, made his fourth appearance on the Major Arena Soccer League's Team of the Week for his performance against Sacramento. His 10 points were the most in a game by a player this season in the MASL. Warren Ukah, playing in his first home game for the Fury, was named honorable mention for his eight-point performance (four goals, four assists).
ONLY ONE: Saturday's win against Sacramento saw every member of the active Fury get in on the action - except one. Corey Maret was the only member of the Fury held without a point in the game, as goaltender Alexis Apodaca picked up an assist on a Daniel Villela goal. Maret was instrumental in several Ontario goals, having the second assist on a few, but those are not credited on the score sheet.
GOING STREAKING: The Fury have won six in a row, and have won 12-of-14 in their current run to the playoffs.
TRYOUTS SUNDAY FOR FURY RESERVES
The Ontario Fury will be holding open tryouts for local players looking to join the Fury's reserve teams and its summer league team this Sunday at the Scheu Family YMCA of Upland. The session will be from 9 a.m. to noon, with check-in starting at 8:30 a.m. Players must be 18 or older, with players younger than 18 needing a parent signature on a waiver. Cost is $40 in advance, or $50 for walk-up registration, which includes a T-shirt and a voucher for a ticket to the Fury's home playoff game in March. For information, go to OntarioFury.com/Tryouts
PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Pacific Division playoff picture is coming into focus. Las Vegas, which clinched the third spot after Turlock's loss to Tacoma on Sunday, is locked into the third position based on losing the first tiebreaker to Ontario (The Fury won the head-to-head matchup, 2-1). From there, things are still up in the air.
Ontario wins the Pacific Division on a tiebreaker with wins over San Diego in the final two games between the two teams. A San Diego win over Ontario in either game, clinches the division for the Sockers.
Las Vegas will play the second place team in the first round of the playoffs. If Ontario finishes second, the Legends will travel to Citizens Business Bank Arena for a one-game playoff at 3 p.m. March 1, with the winner taking on San Diego in a game tentatively scheduled for March 8.
If Ontario wins the division, Las Vegas would travel to Valley View Casino Center for a game against the Sockers, also currently scheduled for March 1. The winner would then play Ontario in a one-game playoff at 7:30 p.m. March 6.
The winner of those games will take on the winner of the Southern Division playoff bracket for the right to advance to the Finals against the winner of a playoff between the winners of the Central and Eastern Division champions.
ABOUT THE SOCKERS
LAST GAME: Beat the Baltimore Blast, 7-2, Feb. 7
NEXT GAME: at Las Vegas Legends, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. The game will be played at the Orleans Arena.
For more details on the Sockers, see the attached game notes provided by San Diego.
AROUND THE MASL
Tacoma picked up its first victory as a member of the MASL on Sunday, as the Stars scored eight unanswered goals to start the second half as they turned a 3-1 halftime lead into a 12-2 victory the Turlock Express, officially eliminating Turlock from the playoffs. Mark Lee scored five times for Tacoma in its final home game of the season, earning a spot as an honorable mention on the MASL Team of the Week. ... Other selections for the Team of the Week were forwards Kraig Chiles (San Diego), Leo Gibson (Missouri) and Alex Megson (Dallas); defender Costea Decu (Detroit); and co-goaltenders of the week, Chris Toth (San Diego) and Zeke Sanchez (Las Vegas). The two goaltenders were credited with shutting down previously unbeaten Baltimore on its Pacific Division swing. ... Las Vegas will be without its head coach, Doug Borgel, Friday night against the Sockers after receiving a red card during a post-game scrum on the field at Orleans Arena after the Legends defeated the Blast in overtime. Fans came onto the field after the game-winning goal, and there was arguing between players and coaches alike. ... The red card news wasn't great for Baltimore, either, as the team's fourth-leading scorer, Adriano Dos Santos, will miss the next two games after receiving a red card against San Diego. He will serve one game for the red card, and a second for points accumulation. ... Two Sacramento players will also miss a game due to points accumulation, as Bryce Campbell and Gabe Padilla will be forced to sit against Turlock.
