NEW YORK (July 1, 2007) - Fans have one more day to vote for the MLS All-Star First XI on the League's official web site www.MLSnet.com. After the voting closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 2, ballots will be tallied to determine who will be named an MLS All-Star for the 2008 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game, which pits the League's best against West Ham United of the English Premier League on Thursday, July 24 at 7 p.m. ET. (ESPN, CBC, Telefutura).
Major League Soccer's 13th season is almost precisely at its midway point as 100 of 210 regular season games have been played. Among all the players who have performed well during the first half of the 2008 MLS season, only 18 will suit up for the MLS All-Stars at BMO Field in Toronto on July 24.
Through six and a half weeks of voting the Fans have cast their ballots and Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham has been the overwhelming favorite of fans capturing nearly five percent of the overall fan vote (4.82 percent), while his teammate, forward Landon Donovan, ranks second with 3.64 percent of the overall vote. Beckham and Donovan lead in their respective positional categories (midfielder and forward), while the Columbus Crew's Frankie Hejduk (defender) and Toronto FC's Greg Sutton lead fan voting at their positions.
Fans can vote for the All-Star First XI online at www.mlsnet.com by selecting one goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders, and two forwards. Fans can vote up to 10 times per day. The online fan balloting program will comprise 25 percent of the total vote for the All-Star First XI, with coaches and general managers, players, and media each holding 25 percent of the vote to combine for the remaining 75 percent.
After the First XI is announced on July 10, the MLS All-Star coach Steve Nicol (New England Revolution) will select five additional players and the Commissioner will make two selections to round out the 18-player roster. If First XI selections are unavailable due to injury, international duty or other commitments, Nicol will decide on alternates.
