San Jose Giants News Release
THE SAN JOSE GIANTS...begin a three-game series in Modesto on Friday night against the Nuts at John Thurman Field. San Jose posted a 3-3 record on their most recent homestand, claiming two-of-three games from Modesto before winning just once in three attempts versus Bakersfield. The Giants are 17-16 in the second half - four games behind the Nuts (21-12) for the top spot in the North Division. San Jose's overall mark of 60-43 is the best record in the California League.
Jesse English To Start Series Opener...Left-handed pitcher Jesse English is slated to start on the mound in Friday's series opener. The 23-year old southpaw is tied for third in the California League in victories (10), fourth in ERA (2.65) and first in strikeouts (104). English defeated Modesto in his last start (July 20) after surrendering just two hits and two runs over six innings. English is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in four starts against the Nuts this season.
Giants vs. Nuts 2008...The Giants will play Modesto 31 times this season - the most of any opponent. Entering Friday's game, San Jose is 14-8 versus the Nuts, but just 4-7 at John Thurman Field. The Giants won three-of-four games in their last visit to Modesto (June 26-29). Matt Downs (.333 AVG, 19-for-57, 3 HR, 11 RBI) and Bobby Felmy (.325 AVG, 25-for-77, 0 HR, 7 RBI) have been San Jose's top hitters versus the Nuts this season. In addition to English, the other starting pitchers in this series - Clayton Tanner (5 GS, 2-1, 2.13 ERA) and Kevin Pucetas (4 GS, 2-0, 2.49 ERA) - have posted impressive numbers against Modesto.
Offensive Leaders...Infielder Brad Boyer continues to lead the Giants in hitting as he brings a .362 batting average into the series. Brock Bond (.307) is also hitting above the .300 clip. Downs (15) and Andy D'Alessio (11) have posted the top home run numbers while Tyler Graham (40) and Mike McBryde (25) lead the team in stolen bases. Meanwhile, Darren Ford has stolen 50 bases overall between San Jose and Brevard County (High-A).
Musgrave To DL...Relief pitcher Mike Musgrave was placed on the Disabled List Friday, a move retroactive to July 23. Musgrave, who is suffering from a sore right shoulder, is 2-1 with a 3.35 ERA and two saves in 31 appearances this season.
Modesto Nuts...The Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, enter the series in the top spot in the second half North Division race. Modesto's overall record of 55-48 is five games behind the Giants for the top mark in the division and homefield advantage in a potential North Division Series meeting. The Nuts have won 11 of their last 14 games. Modesto is second in the California League in team ERA (3.79) - trailing only the Giants (3.40). Aneury Rodriguez (3.03) and Keith Weiser (3.17), who will start the first two games of the series, are sixth and ninth in the league in ERA respectively. All-Star closer Andrew Johnston has saved a league-best 23 games to go with a stellar 1.42 ERA. Offensively, the Nuts are led by first baseman Mike Paulk (.295 AVG, 4 HR, 48 RBI) and center fielder Anthony Jackson (.288 AVG, 1 HR, 33 RBI, 31 SB).
