Omaha Lancers News Release
DES MOINES, IA - One night removed from a memorable, 5-0 home opening victory in the first game of their 28th season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the Omaha Lancers dismantled the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday in a 4-0 win, the team's second consecutive victory, at Buccaneer Arena in Des Moines. With the win, the Lancers improved to 2-0-0 on the season and sit alone in second place in the USHL's Western Conference standings.
After a scoreless opening period, the Lancers started the scoring at 7:38 of the middle stanza when Omaha native Gage Hough buried a power-play goal, his second of season, on feeds from Steven Johnson and future Nebraska-Omaha Maverick Jake Randolph. Later in the period in a flashback to a similar play in the preseason, fellow UNO commit Tyler Vesel streaked his way to paydirt on a shorthanded breakaway at 18:51 to extend the lead to 2-0 Lancers thanks to a tic-tac setup from Tucker Poolman and Randolph.
In the third, two more goals sealed the deal for Omaha, as a dazzling spin-o-rama finish from Randolph, the game's first star, at 8:37, assisted by Hough and Johnson, paved the way for a Luca Frigo insurance marker, the Italian national and Minnesota State-Mankato commit's second goal of the season, assisted by San Diego, California native Brian Williams at 17:02 of the final frame.
In a storybook start to his third USHL campaign, Prairie Grove, Illinois native and veteran Lancers goaltender Cole Bruns continued to impress, stopping each of the 19 pucks he faced in Saturday's game to register his second consecutive shutout to start the season.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a serious test as Omaha heads to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for a date with the defending USHL Western Conference regular season champions, the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 pm on Friday, October 4th. Lancers fans are encouraged to tune in for full play-by-play coverage of the game with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown beginning at 6:50 pm with the "Valpak Pregame Show" on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL AM.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL.
