USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Omaha over Hawks in Shootout

March 1, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A late Waterloo Black Hawks goal forced overtime Sunday, but the visiting Omaha Lancers came away from Young Arena with a 2-1 shootout victory.

Trailing 1-0 with 2:01 remaining in regulation, Waterloo's Alex Robert located the puck in the right circle and sizzled a shot past the left shoulder of goaltender Kris Oldham. It was Robert's first United States Hockey League goal.

Following a scoreless overtime, Omaha's Shane Gersich and Waterloo's Phil Bealieu each converted their teams' first shootout opportunities. The count was still even after a fruitless second round, but Anthony Angello put a backhander between the iron on the Lancers' third try, and that proved to be the difference when the Hawks' final chance flew to the end boards. Waterloo is now 0-4 in shootouts this season.

When the Black Hawks couldn't quell a Lancer rush at the blue line during the opening period, it led to the only goal of the first 57 minutes. At 14:30, Angello stepped into the zone on right wing, feeding a cross-ice pass to Louie Rowe, who snapped a wrist shot past Cale Morris.

A major boarding penalty to Larry Jungwirth gave the Lancers the opportunity to build their lead during the middle of the second, but the Hawks stuck within one goal. Waterloo killed off 3:43 of the power play time before an offsetting penalty was called. The Lancers outshot Waterloo 17-7 during the frame.

For the game the Omaha held a 40-29 edge in chances. Oldham won with 28 stops, while Morris made 39 while suffering the OTL.

On deck next weekend, the Hawks play their last back-to-back road games, visiting the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan Friday and Saturday.
