OKC's Season Comes to End with 4-2 Defeat at RGV
October 3, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
OKC Energy FC News Release
Cordell Cato and Jon Brown found the back of the net with outstanding efforts, but Rio Grande Valley FC was able to put four past Energy FC in OKC's season finale Saturday night at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas.
RGV took an early lead when Kyle Edwards received the ball in the box and was able to turn and get off a quick shot that snuck past Cochran in the 6th minute.
The Greens responded in the 12th minute with a well-worked goal down the right wing. Cordell Cato, Zach Ellis-Hayden and Jose Hernandez combined fluidly, with Hernandez playing Cato in behind the RGV defense, and Cato was able to finish past OKC goalkeeper loanee Kyle Ihn at the near post.
The hosts regained the lead in the 39th minute when Juan Azocar got on the end of a flick into the penalty area and headed low and hard past Cochran.
The Toros doubled their lead four minutes later when Deshane Beckford took advantage of a collision between Ramon Martin Del Campo and CJ Cochran after driving into the penalty area. Joe Amico almost made the goalline clearance, but the defender couldn't quite keep out Beckford's empty-net attempt from eight yards. Cochran was injured on the play and replaced by Cody Laurendi. To add insult to injury, Amico was credited with an own goal for his efforts.
Juan Carlos Obregon Jr. made it four goals on the night with a curler from the corner of the penalty area that found the top corner, leaving Laurendi with no chance to make the save.
The Greens added a second in the 83rd minute in spectacular fashion. Jon Brown's free kick from 23 yards got up and over the wall and clipped the crossbar before bouncing down and across the line.
Already eliminated from playoff contention, Energy FC's 2020 season comes to an end.
