Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers continue their road series against the Tacoma Rainiers at 9:05 p.m. CT at Cheney Stadium, looking to take their first 2-0 lead in a series since sweeping a three-game set against Sugar Land June 7-9...The Dodgers are making their first trip to the Evergreen State since 2018 and the teams are playing one another for the first time since the 2019 season...The Dodgers became the first PCL team to reach 50 wins this season with last night's victory.
Last Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers scored in eight of nine innings and piled up a season-high 20 hits - including 10 extra-base hits - to open their series against the Tacoma Rainiers with a 15-4 victory Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium. Eddy Alvarez led off the game with a home run, giving the Dodgers the lead for the rest of the game. OKC scored in every inning except the third inning, including three separate innings with at least three runs. A four-run second inning featured home runs by James Outman and Hunter Feduccia. Feduccia hit two of the team's four homers, also going deep in the fifth inning. The Rainiers scored three runs in the fifth inning, cutting the Dodgers' lead to 9-4, but were held without a run thereafter. The Dodgers scored six more runs over the final four innings to increase the lead to 15-4.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Jon Duplantier (4-1) makes his fourth straight start and 22nd appearance of the season tonight...He was charged with his first loss of the season in his last outing July 5 in OKC against Las Vegas. He allowed two runs and four hits over 4.0 innings, with one walk and a season-high seven strikeouts in OKC's eventual 8-3 defeat. He retired seven of the final eight batters he faced...Since moving into the starting rotation June 24, Duplantier is 0-1 and the team is 2-1 in his starts. He's allowed six runs and 10 hits over 11.2 innings...Right-handed batters are hitting just .122, but lefties are hitting .297. He's holding all batters to a .190 clip with runners on base...Duplantier was selected by the Dodgers from the Giants in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft Dec. 8, 2021 after he had signed with the Giants just four days prior as a minor league free agent...In 2021, he made a combined seven appearances with Arizona and Triple-A Reno before suffering a season-ending lat strain July 10 against Las Vegas...He was selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by Arizona out of Rice University.
Beau Burrows (4-4) is scheduled to follow Duplantier...During his last start July 6 against Las Vegas, Burrows allowed six runs on six hits over 2.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts and did not factor into the decision of OKC's 10-7 win...Burrows has allowed five runs or more in each of his last three starts after allowing six earned runs in his previous four outings combined...Since June 11, Burrows has made five appearances, including four starts, and during that time he has allowed 24 runs and 24 hits over 17.2 innings. He's allowed 22 walks against just eight strikeouts, and prior to June 11 vs. Salt Lake, he'd never walked more than four batters in his career...Burrows signed with the Dodgers as a free agent Nov. 28, 2021 after playing for Triple-A Toledo and St. Paul last season. He also made five MLB appearances for Detroit and Minnesota...He was originally selected by Detroit with the 22nd pick of the first round in the 2015 MLB Draft out of Weatherford High School (Texas).
Against the Rainiers: 2022: 1-0 2021: N/A All-time: 52-50 At TAC: 20-31 The Dodgers and Rainiers meet for their first of two series of 2022 after last playing each other during the 2019 season. Last night was the first game between the clubs since Aug. 9, 2019 - a span of 1,069 days...Tacoma was the only Triple-A West foe the Dodgers did not play during the 2021 season. The teams were originally scheduled to play in April 2021, but the games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rainiers went on to win the league title...When the teams last met as part of the 2019 schedule, the Dodgers swept a three-game set at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, outscoring the Rainiers, 23-9. Zach McKinstry had a monster series, going 9-for-11 three doubles and three home runs along with 10 RBI...This week the Dodgers are making their first trip to Tacoma since the 2018 season and OKC is 20-31 all-time at Cheney Stadium...OKC is 2-0-3 against the Rainiers in the last five season series and has not lost a series to Tacoma since the 2014 season (0-4 in Tacoma).
Offensive Remarks: The Dodgers set a season high with 20 hits last night, marking their highest hit total since May 30, 2021 at El Paso when they also tallied 20 hits. The team recorded 10 extra-base hits, with four homers and six doubles, and the doubles total was the team's highest in a nine-inning game this season. The 15 runs were tied for the second-most in a game this season, and the 11-run margin of victory was also the second-highest in a game this season, with both figures only behind a 19-0 win at Round Rock May 12...The surge came after OKC had been held to three runs in each of their previous two games in their home series against Las Vegas Friday and Saturday and had scored four runs or less five times in their previous seven games...All nine players in OKC's lineup Tuesday collected at least one hit and scored at least one run. Seven of nine players had at least one extra-base hit, eight players finished with multi-hit games and eight players had at least one RBI. Five players had multi-RBI games...In the last five games, the Dodgers have scored at least 10 runs three times (36 R), but they've been held to a total of six runs in the other two games...The Dodgers lead all 30 Triple-A teams with 409 walks and rank second with 539 runs, 30 triples and a .368 OBP and rank third with a .465 SLG and .833 OPS.
Busch League: Last night Michael Busch tied his career high with four hits, picking up hits in each of his final four at-bats. Busch tied Hunter Feduccia with a team-high three RBI and doubled twice. He has hit at least one double in four straight games, notching five total doubles during that time, and he has hit safely in five straight games, going 10-for-23 (.435). He now has 25 extra-base hits in his 46 games with OKC (15 doubles, 10 homers), accounting for half of his hit total...Busch leads all Dodgers minor leaguers with 21 home runs this season, including 10 with OKC and 11 with Double-A Tulsa and is one of 12 players in all of the Minors with 21 or more home runs this season.
Feducciary Duty: Last night Hunter Feduccia recorded his first career multi-homer game and first two Triple-A home runs. He hit a two-run homer in the second inning and added a solo shot in the fifth inning...In his last three games, Feduccia is 5-for-13 with five extra-base hits...Between OKC and Double-A Tulsa, Feduccia has hit 10 homers in 48 games, matching his career high set last year across 86 games with Tulsa.
Gettin' Miggy With It: Miguel Vargas reached base in each of his final five plate appearances Tuesday night with two hits and three walks. He went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored and extended his hitting streak to six games, going 9-for-25. It's the longest active streak by an OKC player, and he has now hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games, batting .360 (32x89) with nine doubles, three homers, 17 RBI and 18 runs scored...He leads the PCL with 98 total hits and 71 total runs scored this season. His 165 total bases are second-most in the league, while his 61 RBI are third, his 20 doubles and 46 walks are tied for third and his 376 extra-base hits are tied for fourth.
More Than Steady Eddy: Eddy Alvarez homered on the third pitch of last night's game for OKC's third leadoff home run of 2022. He reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. In his five games back with OKC after a stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Alvarez is 9-for-19 with three homers and seven RBI.
Drew Point: Drew Avans went 1-for-5 with a double, run and RBI as he extended his season-best on-base streak to 24 games Tuesday. The on-base streak is the longest by an OKC player this season and the longest active streak in the PCL. He has now hit safely in 20 of his last 24 games (29x93) and has reached base safely in 38 of his last 39 games...From the start of the season through May 31, Avans batted .235 (20x85) with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI and 15 runs scored over 31 games. Since June 1 (33 games), Avans is batting .315 (39x124) with 10 doubles, four triples, three homers, 18 RBI and 29 runs scored. He also has 16 walks during the stretch...He paces the PCL with seven triples this season.
RacKs on RacKs on RacKs: The Dodgers pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts last night, as they have now registered 11 or more strikeouts in seven straight games (93 K), including four games with 14 or more strikeouts and a season-high 16 strikeouts July 6. Prior to July 4, the team had only registered 14 strikeouts just once in a nine-inning game this season and not since April 22 at Sacramento...However, when opponents have not struck out during the seven-game stretch, they are batting .421 (64x152)...OKC's 112 total strikeouts so far in July are most in the PCL.
Turning Point?: The Dodgers allowed four runs Tuesday and have allowed four or fewer runs in three of the last four games. Prior to Thursday, the team had allowed at least seven runs in six straight games, with four games of at least 10 runs...The Dodgers limited Tacoma to five at-bats with runners in scoring position, after opponents had reeled off nine straight games with at least 11 at-bats with RISP, totaling 127 AB...Starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot allowed a season-high four runs over 5.2 innings last night, but improved his record to 7-0. The starting/primary pitchers have had a tough go of things since the calendar flipped to July. Over 10 games, they have only combined for only 37.0 innings while allowing 44 runs (10.70 ERA) and 54 hits (.333 BAA; 54x162), including 11 homers. They have also walked 21 batters, resulting in a 2.03 WHIP...Last night was just the second time in the last 17 games the Dodgers held their opponent scoreless through the first two innings.
Around the Horn: Ryan Noda went 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored Tuesday. He recorded another walk last night and now leads the league with 49 walks this season...Jason Martin collected two more hits and two RBI last night and is batting .343 (12x35) with eight RBI through his first nine games of July with two doubles and four home runs...The Dodgers are in the midst of a stretch of 15 straight games against West Division foes (3-4). OKC is 14-14 against the West Division this season...Tomás Telis did not play yesterday but has reached base eight times over his last three games. Over his last seven games, Telis is 9-for-22 with five walks...For the first time since Pace of Play rules went into effect April 15, the Dodgers have played three straight games lasting at least three hours.
