Oklahoma City Comets News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Dodgers and The Oklahoman will host open auditions Saturday, March 18 for performers to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Dodgers home games during the 2017 season. National Anthem Tryouts presented by The Oklahoman and the Oklahoma City Dodgers will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 18 in the center court at Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City.
Winners will perform before games throughout the Dodgers' 20th season at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, with the grand prize winner performing at the 2017 home opener Thursday, April 6 against the Iowa Cubs.
This marks the seventh straight year for the event, which draws a wide variety of performers from the Oklahoma City area and across the state. A handful of out-of-state performers, including from as far away as Alabama, participated in tryouts last year.
"This annual event has become a fun kickoff point for our season each spring," said Oklahoma City Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes. "Dozens of talented performers compete in front of judges and a live audience at Penn Square Mall, which creates an electric atmosphere. Our judges then have the tough task of selecting the best of the best to perform before our 71 home games at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark."
Tryouts are open to the public and registration is currently available online at okcdodgers.com/anthemtryouts. Only the first 180 people to register will have a guaranteed audition. Registration slots typically fill well in advance of the event each year, so potential performers are encouraged to register early.
Those who do not register online will have a chance to audition on a standby basis the day of the event. If the tryouts run ahead of schedule, or if a performer does not show up for a scheduled time, those in the standby line will be chosen to audition. Standby performers are encouraged to arrive early and will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
The judging panel will consist of editors and columnists from The Oklahoman, city officials and community leaders. Winners will be selected based on voice quality, creative style and stage presence.
