Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
(Edmonton, AB) - The Edmonton Oil Kings have signed 2008-born forward Cage Smith to a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement, the team announced today.
Smith was selected by the Oil Kings in the third round, 57th-overall, at the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, earlier this month.
The Brooks, AB product played this past season with the U15 Prep Rink Hockey Academy in Kelowna where he put up 51 points (21G, 30A) in just 27 games to finish 11th in CSSHL scoring.
The 5-foot-7.5, 130-pound forward finished fourth in CSSHL post-season scoring after tacking on an additional 13 points (3G, 10A) in five playoff contests.
"Cage is a quietly fiery competitor with a business-like attitude on the ice; he puts himself in positions to make his teammates better and shows an understanding of the subtleties of the game," said Michael Chan, Oil Kings Director of Scouting. "The combination of those qualities along with being one of the youngest players in the draft is cause for us to hold strong belief in Cage's continued progression and development path."
He was a teammate and linemate of Oil Kings 2023 first-round selection Joe Iginla.
Smith is the fifth player from the Oil Kings 2023 WHL Prospects and U.S. Priority Draft class to sign a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement joining D Noa Ta'amu, F Joe Iginla, G Parker Snell and D Joshua Lee.
