Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night in Game 1 of the Western Hockey League Championship Series at Rogers Place.
Despite 28 shots on goal between the two clubs in the period, 21 by Edmonton, the Oil Kings and T-Birds entered the first intermission scoreless.
The first period also saw plenty of contact as both teams looked to establish themselves physically early in the series.
In the second period, the Thunderbirds would get the series icebreaker, and the only goal of the middle stanza after Matthew Rempe pounced on a rebound off a Reid Schaefer shot on a two-on-one just under two minutes into the frame.
The Oil Kings had two glorious chances late in the second to tie the game but Thomas Milic came up with a pair of big saves on each of Carter Kowalyk and Jakub Demek to preserve his team's 1-0 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The Thunderbirds grabbed an insurance marker just before the hallway point of the third period after Conner Roulette was able to redirect a puck home off a Tyrel Bauer point-shot.
The Oil Kings were able to halve the Seattle lead just under three minutes later as on a power play, Carter Souch tipped a shot from the blue line from Luke Prokop past Milic for his 10th goal of the post-season.
In the dying moments the Oil Kings pressed for an equalizer but could not solve Milic for a second time.
Sebastian Cossa made 20 saves for the Oil Kings while Milic finished the night stopping 43 of the 44 shots flung his way. The Oil Kings went 1-for-2 on the power play, the Thunderbirds were 0-for-1.
Next up, the Oil Kings and Thunderbirds are back at Rogers Place Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM for Game 2 of the WHL Championship Series.
