Winnipeg Ice News Release
The ICE were back at home against the Central Division leading Edmonton Oil Kings, after the ICE had a successful road trip where they went 3-1. The ICE started the trip off by beating Swift Current by a score of 8-3. They would then split games with Lethbridge before beating Medicine Hat to cap off a crucial road trip. The Oil Kings were coming off a two game win streak after beating Medicine Hat and Lethbridge at home.
The Oil Kings wasted no time finding the back of the net as they took an early 1-0 lead, 5:24 into the first period as Ethan McIndoe scored his 14th of the season. Edmonton would double their lead seven minutes later as Liam Keeler scored his 12th of the season. The play would go to review but it was quickly determined the puck crossed the line. Shots were 10-6 in favor of the Oil Kings after the first frame. Liam Hughes (8 saves) and Sebastian Cossa (6 saves) received the start in net for their respective teams.
Edmonton continued to pile on the pressure in the second frame as they scored two more goals, as Dylan Guenther and Vladimir Alistrov made it four unanswered goals for the visitors. The ICE made a goaltending change after the fourth goal as Gage Alexander replaced Liam Hughes after the latter let in four goals on 14 shots. Shots were 21-20 in favor of the Oil Kings after two.
The Oil Kings would put one goal past Alexander in the third to finish the game 5-0. Alexander made 18 saves in relief of Hughes and Cossa got the shutout with 27 saves. Edmonton went 1/3 on the powerplay as the ICE blanked at 0/2.
The ICE will be looking for revenge as they head to Edmonton on Tuesday, February 25th for a rematch, as they start a four game road trip before returning to the ICE Cave on March 7th to face Moose Jaw.
