St. Lucie Mets News Release

TAMPA, Fla. (July 21, 2014) - Danny Oh's three-run triple put Tampa ahead for good as the Yankees defeated the Mets 5-2 on Monday at Steinbrenner Field.

It was the fifth time in six games the Yankees defeated the Mets this season. They have won the first two games of the current four-game series.

For the second straight day the Mets scored a run in the first and went quietly the rest of the way. Cam Maron's RBI sac fly off of Rafael De Paula put the Mets ahead 1-0.

Domingo Tapia shut out the Yankees over the first four innings but ran into trouble in his fifth and final inning. Aaron Judge led off the frame with a single and Tapia mishandled a bunt by Angelo Gumbs. The error put runners on first and second and Tapia followed with a walk to Trent Garrison to load the bases.

After Tapia struck out Jose Rosario, Danny Oh tripled over the head of center fielder Gilbert Gomez who was playing shallow. The bases cleared and the Yankees led 3-1. Oh scored one batter later when Cito Culver grounded out to short to bring in a run and make it 4-1.

Greg Bird added another run in the seventh when his two-out infield single against Julian Hilario brought home Rosario from third.

Gilbert Gomez tripled home Eudy Pina with no outs in the eighth to make it 5-2. However, the Mets rally was squashed when Jeff McNeil struck out, L.J. Mazzilli grounded out and Cam Maron struck out against Ramon Benjamin.

Tapia took the loss. He gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.

De Paula earned the win. He gave up just one run in 5 1/3 innings.

The Tampa bullpen, which allowed just one hit in four shutout innings on Sunday, gave up one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings on Monday.

Mazzilli was the only player for either side to have a multi hit game. He went 2 for 4.

Each team had six hits apiece.

The start of the game was delayed by 1 hour and 50 minutes due to rain.

Tampa has now limited the Mets to three runs and 11 hits in 18 innings in the last two games. The Yankees have outscored the Mets 35-14 this season.

The Mets (57-40, 17-11) will look to get back on track against the Yankees (48-52, 15-15) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field.
