Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals used a solid night from starter Jimmy Reed and got production from every spot in the lineup to down the Daytona Cubs 9-3 on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The victory ends a three-game losing skid for Palm Beach.
Reed, who has been phenomenal since joining Palm Beach on June 25, allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings and punched out two to earn his fourth winning decision in five starts for the team this year. He only got better as the night went on, retiring seven straight batters before being taken out following a 1-2-3 seventh.
Reed (4-0) has five quality starts to his name in as many outings for Palm Beach, going at least 6.2 innings and allowing fewer than three runs in every game. The Cardinals are 5-0 when he toes the rubber. He has 21 strikeouts and only one walk over the span.
The lefty had plenty of help at the plate in the contest. The team spread the wealth in almost every offensive category. Every position player who entered the game got at least one hit, while seven recorded two. Six players drove in runs before all was said and done.
The Cardinals' 16 hits were the second most for the team in a game this season.
Bruce Caldwell got things started with a bang in the first inning. He lifted a Juan Paniagua pitch over the right field wall, just barely clear of the foul pole. The two-run blast was Caldwell's eighth home run of the year. Nick Martini singled to lead off the inning and scored on the play to make it 2-0.
Palm Beach sluggers have homered in 11 of the last 14 games.
The third through sixth innings were particularly good for the Cardinals (22-9, 58-42). The team scored seven runs in the span and owned a 9-2 lead after the dust settled.
The Birds capitalized on a Paniagua wild pitch and used a Luke Voit RBI single to tally two runs in the third. Palm Beach loaded the bases in the fourth with nobody out but a sacrifice fly by Ildemaro Vargas was the only run-scoring play the squad could muster in the inning.
An RBI single, double and triple from Mason Katz, Gerwuins Velazco and David Popkins, respectively, provided three more runs from Palm Beach in the fifth inning. Another RBI knock off the bat of Popkins in the sixth capped the hit parade and gave the Cardinals a comfortable 9-2 lead.
Iden Nazario and Chris Perry each went an inning apiece in relief of Reed. The Cubs (18-12, 44-54) netted a run on Nazario in the eighth - a solo home run by Albert Almora - but the Cards otherwise got big nights from both hurlers to finish the game and preserve the win.
Paniagua (0-1) allowed five runs in four innings and took the loss for Daytona in his FSL debut.
Wes Darvill went 3-for-4 and Almora chipped in three RBI to lead the Cubs at the dish.
The two teams will wrap up the season series on Wednesday night. LH Kyle Helisek (5-4, 3.32) will start for Palm Beach against LH Rob Zastryzny (1-6, 5.43) for Daytona. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
