Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OHâ The field is set. The microphones are live; and the judges have been picked for the 300+ hopefuls who will be performing their best renditions of the Star Spangled Banner March 6th and March 7th. Contestants will be vying for the chance to perform live in front of a sold-out Fifth Third Field crowd later this summer at a Dayton Dragons game.
The Dragons and the Dayton Daily News are back with the 5th Annual National Anthem Tryouts. The tryouts will be a two-day affair again this year, with contestants singing Saturday at the Dayton Mall from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday's tryouts will be held at the Mall at Fairfield Commons from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Grand Prize winner will earn the honor of performing the National Anthem on Opening Day 2004 as the Dragons host the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Field on, Thursday April 8th at 7 p.m.
"This is one of my favorite events to put on. It is so great to give the people of our community â our neighbors, co-workers, family and friends â the the opportunity to sing our national anthem in front of over 8,000 people," said Dragons President, Robert Murphy.
Due to the overwhelming turnout in past years, the competition is only open to those contestants who have pre-registered. For the fifth consecutive year, over 1,000 applicants have submitted entries to take part in the tryouts.
"This event has grown in popularity each year," Murphy noted. "Not only do we get a huge number of entries each year for performing, but the crowds watching the tryouts each year get bigger and bigger as well. The Miami Valley's response has been a very positive one. "
If you are not one of the lucky registered contestants, you do have an option. Each day there will be a standby line available on a first-come, first-served basis for anyone who does not have a spot. At any point if the tryouts run ahead of schedule or a performer does not show, those in the standby line will be chosen to fill the opening. Standby contestants are encouraged to arrive early.
A panel of local citizens including city officials, choir directors and talent agency personnel will be judging the event. The panel will make its selections based on voice quality, creative style, stage presence and appearance.
