Offensive Struggles Continue in San Diego

Alaska Aces News Release

SAN DIEGO, California – R.J. Enga scored twice and Cris Classen needed only 20 saves in a 4-0 shutout of Anchorage before a crowd of 6,771 Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Enga struck quickly, scoring at even strength only 1:43 into the game after a loose puck in front of Ryan Person, who matched his season-high with 45 saves to keep the Aces in the game. With Anchorage on the power play, attempting to tie the contest, Enga broke free for a two-on-zero breakaway and snapped a wrist shot top shelf over Person's left shoulder seven minutes into the second period. Still, the Aces trailed just 2-0 despite being outshot 37-14 over the first two periods.

Bruce Watson beat Person five-hole less than four minutes into the final period as the Gulls began to pull away. David Neale capped the scoring with 1:08 left in the game. Anchorage, which like San Diego began the game with only 14 skaters, lost Ty Jones and Jason Modopoulos to game misconducts in the second period in the process of being blanked for the third time this season (twice by San Diego). The Aces have dropped 15 of their previous 17 road games and are now 20-44-3, one point ahead of Long Beach in the race to avoid the WCHL cellar.

Anchorage, which lost two in a row for the first time under Perry Florio, will take the week off before returning to action Friday at Bakersfield's Centennial Garden, where the Condors knocked off the Aces 5-1 on Saturday. Friday's tilt will begin at 6:00 p.m. AST. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
