Offense Propels Roadrunners Past Thunder

EDINBURG, Texas - Robert Matlock and Osiel Flores drove in three runs apiece leading the Edinburg Roadrunners to a 9-3 victory over the McAllen Thunder Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in front of 3,729.

The Roadrunners (28-45) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first against Wanel Mesa. With the bases loaded, Matlock hit a two-run double that allowed Antonio De Jesus and R.J. Harris to score. Flores then followed with an RBI single that drove in C.J. Beatty. Gabe Memmert drove in Matlock from third with an RBI groundout that made it 4-0 Edinburg.

In the bottom of the third, Flores hit an RBI double that allowed Matlock to score. One out later, Jonathan Fernandez was hit by a pitch. Fernandez then stole second but the throw allowed Flores to score from third. Brandon Wilkerson followed with an RBI single to center field that allowed Fernandez to score extending the Roadrunners' lead 7-0.

The Thunder (30-43) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Yaibel Tamayo led off with a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Wilson Batista then hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Tamayo to score from third. After a couple of hits and a walk, Carl Johnson hit an RBI single to center field that drove in Zach Mandelblatt from third cutting Edinburg's lead 7-2.

The Roadrunners answered back with a sacrifice fly from Matlock scoring Harris from third and pushing the lead 8-2.

Another sacrifice fly drove in a run for McAllen in the top of the fifth as Tamayo drove in Eric Eiland making 8-3 Roadrunners.

In the bottom of the sixth, Flores drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single that allowed Beatty to score extending the Edinburg lead 9-3.

Jose Pablo Oyervidez (2-0) pitched seven innings allowed three runs, two of which were earned, while scattering five hits and striking out seven.

Reece Cross retired the final six batters giving Edinburg the 9-3 victory.

The Roadrunners welcome the San Angelo Colts to Edinburg Baseball Stadium Friday night as they begin their four-game series. Julio Castro (2-1) is expected to face Ryan Riddle (1-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
