Offense Powers Privateers Past Frenzy, 6-2, Into 1st Place

January 21, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Watertown Privateers News Release

A Friday night snow squall hampered travel in the Northcountry and the greater Eastern seaboard. In the Federal Hockey League, the postponement of Akwesasne's game against Cape Cod meant open waters for the 1000 Islands Privateers to reach first place. Without their captain or top two goalies, the Privateers' powerful offense provided safe passage and smooth sailing to the top of the FHL's standings, as 614 watched 1000 Islands defeat a shorthanded Rome Frenzy 6-2 at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center.

Mike Elberty's team faced two challenges to overcome heading into Friday night. Team captain Shawn Fensel moved up the the Missouri Mavericks in the Central Hockey League earlier in the week, while both regular goalies Josselin St. Pierre and Richard Sillery were unable to go due to injuries. The team called Pittsburgh native Karac Davis to help them reach first place. The Frenzy welcomed Davis to the FHL with a Jeffrey Armando goal, assisted by the top scorer in the league Tibor Varga. Ryan Pearson responded five minutes later with the assist going to Adam McAllister. Alex Lacombe opened second period scoring to break the deadlock, with Justin Levac and Alex Goupil earning the helpers. Goupil tallied his league-high 30th goal and 12th on the power play off passes from Lacombe and Tyler Fernandez. Lacombe set up Levac scored eleven seconds into the third period, and James Kirkwood made it 5-1 from Goupil and Fernandez. Anthony Monte tried to close the gap for Rome, but Levac tallied on the power play to close the night's scoring, as assists went to Lacombe and Michael Byrd. Karac Davis shook off the early goal and stopped 31 of 33 shots, flashing a strong glove hand and getting help from the pipes. The Privateers climbed to first in the league, closing a ten-point deficit to Akwesasne in fifty days.

The team will continue their charity auction as they host Danbury on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, hoping to avenge their 6-5 overtime loss last Friday night at the Danbury Ice Arena. The Privateers will host guests from the Children's Charities and the 50/50 raffle for the game will benefit the local non-profit.

The 1000 Islands Privateers operate in Alexandria Bay and are a founding franchise in the Federal Hockey League. The Privateers play at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay. ‚¬Å“The future is now ‚¬Â in the Federal Hockey League as the top talent play professional hockey with a chance to advance their careers.
