Orange County SC News Release
IRVINE, CA (June 7, 2014)- Three goals in the space of four minutes propelled the Orange County Blues (5-7-0) to a 4-3 win against the Dayton Dutch Lions (2-7-2) in front of 700 fans at Orange County's World Soccer Celebration.
It all started very differently for the Blues as Matt Walker poked home his first professional goal after just 12 minutes to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Blues responded in emphatic fashion as Cortez headed home his third goal of the season following a pinpoint cross from Allan Russell to draw the sides level in the 18th minute.
Less than a minute later, Joshua Suggs turned Ross Friedman inside out before tucking the ball into the net.
The route continued two minutes later as Jimmy Turner found space down the right before sending a perfectly weighted cross for Russell to touch home his third goal of the season.
The Blues stretched their lead to 4-1 in the 64th minute as Gabriel Gonzalez crossed for Cortez, who placed his downward header to perfection for his second of the match.
Thinking it was already curtains for Dayton, Orange County took their foot off the pedal and Elii Garner handed the Dutch Lions a lifeline, sweeping home from close range.
Dayton continued to storm forward and pulled to within one as Joel Delass took advantage of slack defending in the box to push the ball through Taylor Peay and goalkeeper Patrick McLain's legs in the 93rd minute.
It was nothing more than scant consolation, however, as referee Ramon Hernandez blew the whistle right after the ensuing kickoff as the Blues held on for all three points.
Both sides have quick turnarounds as Dayton will square off against the La Galaxy II in less than 24 hours.
The Orange County Blues will pack their bags and head for the East coast where they will take on Orlando City and Charlotte on Wednesday and Friday respectively.
The Blues took over first half with a goal by Christopher Cortez at minute 18, a goal by Joshua Suggs at minute 19' and Allan Russell at minute 19'.
After tonights match Dayton continue their West Coast trip as they face LA Galaxy II Sunday June 8 and Arizona United SC, Wednesday June 11.
The Blues head to Florida as they face Orlando City Wednesday June 11 for the first time this season.
