Dayton Dutch Lions News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - The Dayton Dutch Lions FC (2-7-2, 8 points) lost their first game tonight in a three game trip to the West Coast, losing 4-3 against the Orange County Blues.
The game just got started when Orange County Blues had an open chance in the 1st minute after a long throw in but Cortez missed the open shot. The Blues put on pressure early but it was the Lions that took the lead when a long ball from Granger came in the feet of Schoenfeld who took a shot that the Blues goalie nearly saved but Walker was right there to put the ball in the open net giving the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The game completely changed though in a four minute time span when Orange County scored three times between the 18th and 22nd minute. Cortez (a header wide open at the 2nd post), Suggs (miscommunication between Friedman and Williams) and Russell giving the Blues a comfortable lead. The Lions needed time to recover and did have a chance to get back in the game when Walker had an open shot in the box going over the crossbar.
The Dutch Lions FC came out with the same 11 in the 2nd half hoping to turn the momentum but they could not create any chances. It was actually Orange County Blues that put the game away in the 64th minute when Cortez scored his 2nd goal of the game when a ball was crossed in from the left and Cortez headed the ball in behind Smith's back in the 5 yard box making the score 4-1.
Coach Sid van Druenen made some substitutions with Vickers and Khutsidze coming in for Walker and Guilherme and later Broekhuizen as target man up front. The substitutions paid off when in the 78th minute Eli Garner hit home a loose ball in the box scoring 4-2 but the Lions were unable to make it a close game with the Blues passing the ball around. The Lions did score the 4-3 in the 94th minute when a free-kick from Granger was headed into the box by Broekhuizen to Joel DeLass, who scored his first goal of the season making the score 4-3. There was no time remaining however to get an equalizer leaving the Dutch Lions FC empty handed in their first game on their three game West Coast trip. The are back in action already again tomorrow when they play the LA Galaxy II.
Head Coach Sid van Druenen had the following to say after the game: "This is again a disappointing result for us, we knew we needed to get points here tonight to stay in the race for the playoffs. We got a good goal that gave us the lead tonight but had a weak five minutes where Orange County scored three goals making the game very hard on us and despite the effort the guys put in the second half we were unable to get points here tonight. Now the focus is on recovering the legs as we play tomorrow versus the LA Galaxy II."
After the three game trip the Lions stay on the road to play Rochester Rhinos on Friday June 20 before returning home on Sunday June 22 against the current leader Orlando Lions.
