Ton Dutch Lions FC Lose to the Colorado Rapids Reserves at Home

WEST CARROLLTON, OH ...The Dayton Dutch Lions FC would welcome the Colorado Rapids Reserve on a hot, steamy night in Dayton. This would be the first meeting between the two teams and both would prove fierce competitors. Colorado would earn their goal in the first half and Dayton would capitalize off a blocked penalty kick to earn the equalizer in the second half. The game would end with an unfortunate own goal that would put Colorado ahead for the win.

The Dayton Dutch Lions FC and the Colorado Rapids Reserves started slowly, cautiously. as the two teams would feel each other out, in their first meeting. The Lions would apply good pressure in the first half both defensively and offensively. The Rapids Reserve would come out physical and aggressive. Dayton would see chances created as Cameron Vickers would send the ball to Karamba Jenneh who would make it down the left and cross the ball hard in front of the Rapids goal, but there would be nobody on the other end to put it away. In the twenty eighth minute Colorado would find Carlos Alvarez down the left, he would end up one on one with the Dayton keeper and he would place the ball in the far right corner putting Colorado up by one. Shortly after in the twenty ninth minute, Dayton's Brock Granger playing in the middle as captain would come from behind with a tackle and the referee would issue a red card, leaving the Lions with ten. Dayton would have a chance to equalize in the thirty second minute with a free kick taken by Shintaro Harada just outside the box. The ball would curl just wide of the inside corner of Colorado's goal. The half would end Dayton Dutch Lions FC 0, Colorado Rapids Reserves 1.

The Colorado Rapids would waste no time as the second half got underway and in the forty ninth minute Alvarez would combine with his middle and would end with a cross ripped left to right in front of the Lion's goal but nobody could get on the end of it. Dayton would get their opportunity in the fifty eighth minute when a foul in the box by Colorado would give the Lions a penalty kick. Jenneh would take the kick and Colorado's keeper John Berner would make the save to his right, but Jenneh would follow up and would get another foot on it and put it into the back of the Rapids Reserves net to even the score. The Rapids Reserves would start to press more in an effort to go ahead. Dayton's Matt Williams would be called on to make saves in the eighty first and eighty second minutes when Colorado's front line would break through with speed and try to chip over Williams head. He would stand tall and handle the balls with confidence. Dayton's keeper would be called upon again later in the half but would respond with a diving save to keep the Lions in the game. Unfortunately, in the ninety second minute a miscommunication between a Dayton defender and the keeper would result in an own goal. Dayton Dutch Lions 1, Colorado Rapids Reserves 2.

Dayton's new Coach Matthew Weston had this to say about the game. "So proud of my players tonight. After going down to ten players very early in the game we were still the best team. We continued to possess the ball, play through the units and caused them so many problems. Sometimes this game is cruel and the own goal with literally the last kick cannot take away from how far we've come as a team since my arrival. Our belief, togetherness and willingness to continue to learn is a pleasure to be a part of. Heads up now and onto Orlando next week!"

The Dayton Dutch Lions FC (6-15-4) are on the road again Sunday, August 31st when they play Orlando City (16-3-4) at 7:30pm. The Dutch Lions play at home again on Friday, September 5th at 3:30pm against the Wilmington Hammerheads (6-7-8) to round off their last game of the 2014 season.
