Oakland Roots vs. Sporting KC II Match Notes

October 30, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release

Matchup: Oakland Roots SC vs. Sporting KC II

Competition: USL Championship

Date: October 30, 2021

Kick off time: 7:00 PM PST

Weather Forecast: 60 degrees, mostly cloudy

Venue: Laney College, Oakland, CA

Match Preview:

Oakland Roots return to Laney College for the season finale with a chance to make the playoffs with a win over Sporting KC II and a little help from Orange County vs LA Galaxy II. So long as LA draws or loses and Roots win, Oakland will be in the Playoffs in it's inaugural season.

Oakland Roots have faced adversity all season long. From a canceled home opener, to health and safety protocols forcing the postponement of two more games, to playing half their home games away from Laney, to coming back from one win in the first 13 games to now being on the brink of the playoffs. The story of Oakland Roots first USL Championship season is truly one for the movie writers.

Oakland host Sporting KC II Saturday at Laney College for the first time in club history. Roots will end the season playing a team from the Central Division while all other Pacific Division Rivals in the playoff fight are set to kick off at 7:30 PM, 30 minutes behind Oakland Roots. Following a heart-stopping 4-3 win to keep the playoff hopes alive in San Diego on Sunday, Oakland now has to back that win up with another three points to earn the final playoff spot in the division.

Oakland Roots need all three points as LA Galaxy sit one point ahead and own the tiebreaker over Roots, meaning a draw and just a single point would not be enough. Additionally should LA win, Oakland would not be able to pass the Southern California side, even with a win. Tacoma Defiance, who are even on points with Oakland cannot pass Roots in the standings so long as Roots win. Oakland holds the head to head tiebreaker over Tacoma if it were to come to a situation where both sides won.

The opponents on Saturday night are the reserve side of MLS Sporting Kansas City. Sporting KC II are currently in a position where they cannot make the playoffs in the final game of the year so they are playing for pride at this point. KC currently sit in last place in the Central Division having won just four games all season long. Most recently conceding six goals in a loss to Birmingham on Sunday. KC features Oakland born and raised goalkeeper Kendall Mcintosh who is signed to the MLS side but has made 12 appearances and 35 saves for the reserve team this year.
