Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ONEONTA, NY --- Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Vermont Expos, they get much, much worse.
The Expos losing streak reached 12 games with the largest margin of victory loss and most runs allowed in team history as the Oneonta Tigers exploded for more fireworks than was saw on the Burlington waterfront Thursday as they pounded out 18 hits in a 19-2 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action Friday afternoon at Damaschke Field.
The 19 runs allowed broke the old team record of 18 runs set on four different occassions, including three times in week in June of 1999. The 17-run margin of victory for Oneonta makes it the worse loss in Expos history, which was formerly 14 runs in a 15-1 loss at, ironically, Oneonta on July 2, 2002.
Other records tied were most hits allowed in a game (18), most RBI (14) and most at bats (44) in a nine-inning game. 15 of the 19 runs allowed were earned, raising the Vermont team ERA average from 5.13 to a season-high 5.74 ERA.
On the flip side, the Expos offense got two hits from the first three batters in the first inning of the game, but Henry Encarnacion was thrown out at the plate on a Kory Casto single. From there, Vermont got just three more hits over the last eight innings, including an RBI double from Oscar Bernazard in a two-run seventh inning.
Vermont starter Nick Long (0-3) was again done in by a bad inning. Long, who gave up nine runs in the fourth inning of his first start at Lowell on June 24th, gave up two runs on three hits in the second inning on Friday.
He struggled with his control in the third inning, walking three straight batters after a leadoff walk. He got a strikeout for the second out and was one step away from getting out of the inning, but two straight hits plated three runs and three more runs scored after the potential final out of the inning reached on a strikeout/wild pitch as Oneonta scored six runs in the third for an 8-0 lead.
Oneonta added three runs in the fourth and and four runs in the sixth (all earned) off reliever Tyler Kirkman, while James Russell allowed four unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Nate Doyle was 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBI, while Kelly Hunt was 4-for-5 with two runs as every Oneonta starter had at least one hit, six players scored more than one run and five players had more than one RBI.
The loss means night seven in the Vermont dugout at Centennial Field for the Expos front office. General Manager C.J. Knudsen will be sleeping for the seventh straight night in the dugout, while other members of the front office join him for as many as the sixth straight night as a part of "Slumper Party."
Vermont, now 1-17 overall and being outscored 100-20 during this 12-game losing streak, will return to Centennial Field hoping that Friday was the worst of the worst and that the beginning of a six-game homestand on Saturday night will be the start of good things to come the rest of the 2003 season.
