Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Fishkill, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Renegades (10-7) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 9th tonight at Dutchess Stadium, but RF Matt Rico grounded out to first to clinch a 6-5 victory for the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters (10-7). The bases were loaded when PH Josh Kendrick reached on an error by Crosscutters 3B Michael Cockrell, CF Mitch Jones singled, and C John Jaso was intentionally walked. Yoann Torrealba (W, 2-0, 2.11) allowed five hits, four earned runs, and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Jonathan Schneider pitched out of a jam to earn his fourth save of the year.

The Crosscutters jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after an inning and a half. 1B Mike Madrid hit an RBI single in the first stanza; in the second, CF Sean Smith and Cockrell sandwiched RBI doubles around an RBI groundout by 2B Justin Harris. Hudson Valley struck back in the bottom of the inning, however, on 3B Kris Dufner's three-run homer, his first hit as a Renegade. The 'Gades tied the game 4-4 in the fourth when a groundout by LF Joe Don Reames brought home SS Aneudi Cuevas. Williamsport took the lead for good in the sixth on Smith's second RBI double of the game and RF Anthony Bocchino's RBI single. The Renegades finished off the scoring in the bottom of that inning when Cuevas scored on a throwing error by SS Javier Guzman, his 9th error on the season. Guzman finished the night 4 for 5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Smith hit 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Dufner's homer was the main offensive highlight for the 'Gades; Cuevas went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and his second stolen base of the year.

Renegades reliever Aleurys Lopez (L, 0-1, 2.76) surrendered five hits and two earned runs while striking out two in four innings to take the loss. Starter Jarrod Farrell saw his ERA increase to 4.43 tonight. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs in five innings while striking out four. The loss dropped the 'Gades back into a tie for second place in the McNamara Division with the Crosscutters. Both teams are three games behind the first-place Brooklyn Cyclones (13-4), who defeated Aberdeen 4-1 tonight.

The fourth consecutive capacity crowd at Dutchess Stadium saw a great postgame Independence Day Fireworks Show, sponsored by 101.5 WPDH, as well as the second of three semifinals in the Hit-A-Yankee Contest. Hudson Valley Renegades Director of Food Services (and former New York Yankees relief pitcher) Joe Ausanio took the mound against three competitors, striking out two and allowing a pop-up to the third contestant, who was declared the winner. He advances to the finals, to be held on September 3, the Renegades final home date of the 2003 season.

The 'Gades now hit the road for a week, heading upstate for three games against the Auburn Doubledays (12-5 entering tonight) and then on to the Green Mountain State for a three-game series with the struggling Vermont Expos (1-16 entering tonight). The Renegades will return to Dutchess Stadium next Saturday, July 12, to begin a three-game set with the Batavia Muckdogs.

John Dischiavo (1-2, 7.71) will start for Hudson Valley tomorrow at Falconer Park in Auburn, N.Y. Charles Talanoa (1-1, 2.92) takes the mound for the Doubledays.
