Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (February 27, 2013) - The Connecticut Sun announced Wednesday that Nykesha Sales, the all-time leading scorer in franchise history will be joining the team as an assistant to the coaching staff and community liaison during the 2013 season.
"We are excited to have Nykesha back in the mix," Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. "Her experience will be beneficial to our players, and she will be a great representative of our team and brand in the community."
In her role, Sales will help coach Anne Donovan and her staff at practice. She will also be an active team ambassador, representing the Sun in the community throughout the season.
"I am very excited that Nykesha will be with us this summer," Donovan said. "She is one of the very best to play in the WNBA and her experience will be such an asset to the Sun. I know she will have tremendous impact within our team and in the community."
Sales scored a team record 3,955 points during her WNBA career, which spanned 278 games with the franchise from 1999-2007. She played in a team-record 248 consecutive games from June 10, 1999-July 6, 2006, and still holds the all-time Connecticut marks for points, games, minutes (8,762), made field goals (1,481), field goal attempts (3,539), made three-pointers (352), three-point attempts (990) and steals (490). Sales is one of just six players to be voted on to seven WNBA All-Star teams. Only two players, Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie, have appeared in more All Star games.
"I am extremely excited about being a part of the Sun again this summer," Sales said. "It has always been a great organization, and I have a lot of amazing memories from my time there as a player. Although I'm returning with a whole new role and responsibilities I'm really looking forward to helping Anne and her staff as they try to bring a championship to the best fans in the WNBA. And getting out into the community as a representative of the team is going to be so much fun!!!"
The Connecticut Sun will open its 11th season at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday, May 25th, against the New York Liberty at 7 p.m. Season tickets for 2013 are currently on sale, and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Sales Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX or by e-mailing the Sun at tickets@connecticutsun.com .
