San Jose Giants News Release

The Modesto Nuts collected 12 hits and had a pair of three-run innings en route to a convincing 9-3 victory over the Giants on Thursday evening at John Thurman Field. San Jose (25-17) was unable to build on their thrilling comeback win from the previous night and have now dropped two of the first three games in the series.

Vaun Brown (3-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) remained hot at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the way offensively for the Giants in defeat. Dilan Rosario (3-for-4, RBI) and Grant McCray (2-for-5) also had multi-hit games.

Will Bednar started on the mound for San Jose and began his outing in dominant fashion with five strikeouts over two scoreless innings. The Nuts, however, broke through with a three-run bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead and would never look back. Jonatan Clase was hit by a pitch with one out to start the rally before Edwin Arroyo grounded a single into right to put runners on the corners. Ben Ramirez was up next and the Modesto #3 hitter launched a three-run home run to deep right field. The homer was Ramirez's second of the series and fifth overall this season.

Modesto starter William Fleming tossed five effective innings yielding only one run with six strikeouts. The Giants' only run against Fleming came in the top of the fifth as Aeverson Arteaga doubled with two outs before Brown stepped to the plate and hammered an RBI double off the center field wall to trim the Nuts lead to 3-1.

San Jose though would get no closer as Modesto immediately answered with a three-run bottom of the fifth to take control of the game. After Bednar retired the first batter of the inning, Randy Bednar of the Nuts laced a double into left and then stole third. Arroyo followed by grounding a single through the drawn-in infield to plate a run and make the score 4-1. The RBI hit knocked Bednar out of the game as Hunter Dula was then summoned from the bullpen. Ramirez was up next and he hit a slow grounder to third that Riley Mahan fielded, but the throw to second in an attempt to retire the lead runner was late. Two batters later, Walking Cabrera blasted a double into the left center field gap scoring both Arroyo and Ramirez extending the Nuts lead to 6-1.

Modesto kept the pressure on with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Facing Seth Lonsway, the inning began with a single from Colin Davis. Amador Arias then hit a grounder to third that deflected off the glove of Mahan and into shallow left for an error. Davis advanced to third on the miscue and when left fielder Najee Gaskins threw wildly back into the infield, was able to sprint home to score a run. Two errors were assessed to the Giants on the play. Two batters later, Arroyo produced his second run-scoring hit of the contest as he singled home Arias for an 8-1 Nuts advantage.

San Jose was able to push across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but still fell well short. Singles from Brown and Victor Bericoto put runners on first and second with one out. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Gaskins delivered an RBI groundout to shortstop. Then with two down, Rosario's line drive RBI single into left plated the Giants' third and final run of the night.

Modesto completed the scoring in the bottom of the eighth as Ramirez came through with his fourth RBI - a two-out run-scoring double to make it 9-3.
