Stockton, CA. - Matt Olson kept the Nuts at arm's length in the Nuts 5-3 loss to the Ports on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

After the Nuts (5-15, 28-62) tied the game at one in the third, Ports (15-5, 52-38) first baseman Matt Olson ripped a two-out three-run double to build a lead that proved to be insurmountable for the Nuts.

Late in the game, the Nuts had chances to come back, but could not get the big two-out hit. In the sixth, the Nuts pulled to within one when Mike Tauchman drove in Rosell Herrera with a RBI single, his second RBI of the night. Tauchman touched home on Will Swanner's two-out, RBI double. With Swanner at second representing the potential tying run, Jordan Ribera struck out looking on a ball eight inches below his knees leading to Ribera's ejection from the game by home plate umpire Skyle Shown.

In the seventh, Pat Valaika was stranded at second after a two-out double when Matt Wessinger struck out looking. Tauchman record his third hit of the night by clubbing a double in the eighth, but was stranded when Chris O'Dowd lined out to the second baseman.

Olson extended the Ports lead late with a seventh inning home run, his California League-leading 25th of the year.

Ryan Carpenter (L, 2-4) struck out a season-high eight batters but also walked a season-high five in his ninth start for the Nuts. The lefty worked five innings, allowed four hits and four runs.

Ports starter Jake Sanchez (W, 3-0) retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished after six innings allowing three runs, no walks and striking out five.

Nolan Sanburn (S, 4) tossed a perfect ninth inning to send the Nuts to their second consecutive loss.

The Nuts will try to avoid the three-game series sweep against the Ports on Thursday night with Devin Burke on the mound opposite Josh Bowman. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:10 p.m. To listen on your iPhone or iPad listen live here.
