Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Opportunities presented themselves on Wednesday night in San Jose, but the Bakersfield Blaze could not catch a break; every line drive found a glove, and a quiet offensive night led to a 3-1 San Jose Giants victory.

For five innings, the contest was a dynamite pitchers' duel.

Ismael Guillon (L, 0-2) sailed along, allowing just four total baserunners (two hits, a walk and an error) through his five, and Pat Young (W, 7-3) was almost as solid, giving up just one run to Bakersfield through six innings, stranding baserunners at every turn.

From the 6th inning on, however, the Giants took over.

With one out in the bottom half, a single and a homer in rapid succession put San Jose on top. Later in the inning, an error, a wild pitch and a soft flare single gave the Giants a run of cushion, also ending the night for Ismael Guillon, who, in defeat, still made his best start as a Blaze.

In the 8th, the Giants pulled away. With James Allen on the hill, San Jose ran off a string of four in five reaching safely, adding two, and going up 5-1. Jacob Johnson and Kyle McMyne worked scoreless relief for the Blaze.

Meanwhile, the Blaze had a rather frustrating run of innings with runners aboard but no runs to show for it. Bakersfield put a runner on base in every inning besides the 2nd, but stranded 10, leaving one runner on in each of the final four innings.

For the Giants, Stephen Johnson pitched the 7th, and Tyler Rogers (S, 2) worked the 8th and 9th for the unlikely save.

The loss is the third in a row for a Bakersfield team hitting a small skid off the big seven-game winning streak, dropping the club to 11-9 after the break, and 56-34 overall, with five more on the road trip.

The series in San Jose concludes on Thursday with a 12:35pm afternoon special. Chris Stratton gets the call for the Giants, and Drew Cisco counters for the Blaze, looking to avoid getting swept.

Make sure to tune in to the day baseball as Dan Besbris brings the call five minutes prior to first pitch. Fans can log in from their work desk at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Pop in an earbud and tune out the world.
