BLAINE, Minn. (February 18, 2011) -- Here is a weekly roundup of news items for the NSC Minnesota Stars and other league and team news from the North American Soccer League.
Stars announce Kids Day exhibition game June 23 The NSC Minnesota Stars announced the scheduling of the second annual Kids Day exhibition game at the NSC Stadium. The Stars will play an opponent to-be-determined at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011, in a match geared toward Twin Cities youth. In addition to the special match, the Stars will host an autograph session and photo opportunities on the field after the game. Tickets for Kids Day cost $5 for just the game or $10 for the match and a bagged lunch. Tickets for Kids Day and all NSC Minnesota Stars home matches are available by calling (763) 792-7355. Orders by fax or mail are also accepted.
With ownership transfer complete, Stars ready to sign players With the ownership transition from the National Sports Center to the NASL complete and the NASL sanctioned to compete in 2011, the Stars are ready to begin signing and re-signing players for the upcoming season. The Stars did not want to bind players to the team without a proper league, and the change in ownership had provided a hurdle for signings. Head coach and director of soccer operations Manny Lagos said he expects players carried over from 2010 to honor their contracts.
News from around the North American Soccer League NASL executives met with officials from the United States Soccer Federation in Las Vegas from Feb. 10-13 to finalize sanctioning for the 2011 season. Ultimately, the NASL received one-year provisional sanctioning to move forward with its inaugural season. The league held a conference call with members of the media on Monday, Feb. 14, to discuss details of the provisional sanctioning.
The Carolina RailHawks held a press conference Wednesday to announce details of their new ownership group. Former owners Selby and Brian Wellman sold a majority share of the team to Traffic Sports USA. Cary, N.C., resident Paul Singh owns a minority stake in the club.
FC Edmonton will play a home game April 27 against Major League Soccer's Toronto FC in its first game in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. The Canadian Championship determines Canada's representative in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Miami FC held a press conference Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to announce the rebranding of the team to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The name honors the Strikers of the original NASL. The team also released a secondary ligature mark as part of its rebranding process.
The Montreal Impact announced Tuesday afternoon that 2011 season tickets were on sale to the general public. Season ticket holders this year-Montreal's last in division two-will have priority access to tickets when the Impact join Major League Soccer in 2012. The team announced Thursday the signings of former Vancouver Whitecaps defender Zourab Tsiskaridze and former AC St. Louis attacking midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer.
The Puerto Rico Islanders FC will hold an open tryout in Orlando, Fla., from March 1-3. The deadline for registration is Feb. 22. The participation fee for the Islanders' combine is $150.
FC Tampa Bay announced Tuesday that second division veteran David Hayes had joined the team's coaching staff. Hayes played last season with the Carolina RailHawks after stints in Portland and Atlanta. Tampa Bay has also hired James Faylo as head athletic trainer. The team also announced the signing of Japanese midfielder Tsuyoshi Yoshitake.
