Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers held a well attended press conference announcing the official name of the franchise. The announcement made in front of hundreds of members of the public and the media on Thursday, Feb. 17 marks the beginning of a new chapter in South Florida soccer history.

Numerous leaders from local government along with current and former Strikers were on hand to witness the event, which was filled with excitement and optimism about the future of soccer in the region. Speaking at the event were Strikers President Aaron Davidson, former General Manager Tim Robbie, Strikers Coach Daryl Shore and Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler. After the ceremony, youth players were able to interact with the new Strikers in the Strikers' youth-soccer kick-around to close out the festivities.

Strikers CEO Aaron Davidson stated "I am the first to acknowledge that a name in and of itself simply that. But the Strikers were and continue to be an institution. And we are committed to extending and building on that institution."

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were one of the premier professional soccer clubs in North America during the late 1970s and early 1980s, competing in the North American Soccer League and creating a distinct soccer culture in South Florida. In 2009, Miami FC brought professional soccer back to Fort Lauderdale and in 2010 announced that they would honor the legacy of the Strikers starting in 2011 with the launch of the new NASL.

The 2011 regular is set for Apr. 9 when the Strikers face off with FC Edmonton at Lockhart Stadium to kick off the season.
