Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Tuesday) - Despite budget limitations, venue changes, ownership transition and several in-season player loses, the club equaled its all-time record of 41 points in an NASL season and for third successive season the Strikers have the most points of any team from the state of Florida in NASL play. Fort Lauderdale was also able to make history this season equaling the longest run ever by an NASL club in the US Open Cup. Fort Lauderdale advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup after eliminating two MLS sides (DC United and Orlando City SC) and was the last non-MLS team in the competition.
* Fort Lauderdale's six away victories (five in NASL and one in the US Open Cup) were the most recorded by any professional team in the state of Florida this season. * Goalkeeper Matias Reynares was the only player from a Florida NASL club called into a US national team this season. Reynares was called up to the US U-19 National Team last month. * Former Juventus and Italian National Team forward Amauri recorded a Goal of the Year candidate with a bicycle kick on August 20 in a 3-1 win over Ottawa. * Strikers midfielder Luis Felipe Fernandes, who played in 35 of 36 games this season is a candidate for NASL Young Player of the Year.
The Strikers were picked to finish last in the league in the preseason by Minnesota-based publication Fiftyfive.one. Fort Lauderdale however exceeded expectations and finished top among the four NASL teams from the state of Florida. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers are currently preparing to be even stronger in the 2017 season and will continue the work on the U23, U19, and Academy programs.
