LAST WEEK:
TUE Feb. 8 ACES @ Columbus (5-1 LOSS) 7:30 p.m. Columbus Civic Center
[COLUMBUS, GA] - The Asheville Aces lost 5-1 last night in Columbus, Georgia to the Cottonmouths. This improves Columbus' season record to 4-0 versus the Aces. Leading the way for the Cottonmouths was Tom McMonagle with two goals on the night.
Brett Roat had the only Aces goal which came on the power play mid-way through the second period with the Aces already down three goals. The Cottonmouths, however, would strike back just over a minute later to put any thoughts of a comeback to rest for Asheville. Colby Will added the fifth goal for Columbus on a shot that deflected off of two players and then bounced over Aces goalie Mark Scally's head (29 saves on 34 shots). In goal for Columbus was Terry Friesen who had a quieter night, stopping 23 of 24 for the win.
Making their debuts for the Aces were defenseman Robert Cardinal and forwards Billy Cameron and Marc-Andre Roy. Roy lived up to his billing of being a tough guy right out of the gate as he crunched a Cottomouth defender into the boards, knocking out a pane of glass, then proceded to trash talk the Cottomouth bench. The next shift, he took on Brent Toews in a center ice showdown. Roy finished the night with two majors and a ten minute misconduct.
THU Feb. 10 Huntsville @ ACES (4-3 win) 7:30 p.m. Asheville Civic Center
[ASHEVILLE, NC] - The Asheville Aces defeated the Huntsville Havoc for the first time this season with the winning goal coming with 2.3 seconds left on the clock. The win brings the Aces within 8 points of the sixth and final playoff spot in the SPHL standings.
With the game tied at three, the Aces had a critical offensive zone face-off with 2.3 seconds remaining in the third period. Jarno Mensonen won the draw and defenseman Dan Pszenyczny picked up the loose puck and fired a wrist shot past Havoc goalie Matt Carmichael just before the final buzzer sounded. The Havoc players contested that the goal should not count, however, the officials awarded the goal and the victory to Asheville.
The game started off with the Aces out-skating and out-hitting the Havoc and getting off to a 3-0 first period lead with goals from Jan Kentos, Joel Petkoff and Brett Roat. In the second, the Aces slowly let the Havoc back in the game as Huntsville outshot Asheville 21-9 but Aces goalie Mark Scally was outstanding in net, allowing only one goal from Steve Howard. In the third, it was again Huntsville who dominated, although the Aces found their physical game again. Scally was solid as he stopped 22 of 24 shots in the frame. Huntsville's second goal came from Doug Merrell and the tying goal was from Brandon Doria.
Seemingly ready for another defeat, the Aces fought hard to the end and Pszenyczny's last second heroics brought the Aces to victory.
FRI February 11, 2005 Macon @ ACES (5-1 loss) 7:30 p.m. Asheville Civic Center
Three quick goals stunned the Aces as the Macon Trax took control of Friday night's game in Asheville, going on to win it 5-1.
John Gurskis opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the game after a bad defensive mistake turned into a 3 on 1. Three minutes later it was Ryan Rivard who made it 2-0, and then Mark Allen made it 3-0 with only five minutes expired in the game.
Nick Niedert replaced Mark Scally between the pipes and played a solid game holding off the Trax for the remainder of the first period. Brett Roat brought Asheville within one as he scored at the 14:11 mark of the first on the powerplay. Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Aces would bring on this night.
After a scoreless second, where the Aces seemed to be getting their bearings straight, Mark Allen made it 4-1 beating Niedert at 4:19 of the third period. Three minutes later it was Eden Welch who finished the scoring for Macon.
Terry Denike got the win in net for Macon stopping 30 of 31 shots. Mark Scally received the loss allowing 3 goals on 6 shots. Niedert stopped 28 of 30 shots.
SAT February 12, 2005 Fayetteville @ ACES (6-1 win) 7:30 p.m. Asheville Civic Center
[ASHEVILLE, NC] - The Asheville Aces defeated the red hot Fayetteville Fire Ants 6-1 in front of a crowd of 3,412 at the Civic Center Saturday night, to keep them within 8 points of the final playoff spot in the SPHL standings.
The Aces, who were looking to bounce back from a poor effort Friday night versus Macon, set the tone for the early with Peter Bournazakis scoring just over a minute into the first period. The game-wining goal was scored by Jarno Mensonen followed by another goal from Joel Petkoff. Chad Peck scored the Fire Ants only goal of the night in the first.
The Aces continued to add points to the board with goals from Eldon Cheechoo, Peter Bournazakis, and Brett Roat in the second period. Both teams were hitting heavy and wracked up 83 total penalty minutes including a game misconduct for Fayettville's Mike Fournier.
Asheville played a very sound defensive third period frustrating the Fire Antz with a sustained fore check and forcing them to dump the puck in to the Aces zone. The frustration seemed to come to a head late in the third as Fayetteville took several slashing penalties, putting the Aces on a 5 on 3 powerplay to finish the game.
